It was her remark that she wasn't embarrassed because all the kids had them on. In other words, she's telling people to be content in their poverty.

(50,553 posts)Farmers are generally "paper rich and cash poor."
Strange thing is, hog farmers buy overshoes for their kids; if you have to work in a place that's got a foot of pig manure on the ground, shoes you can clean with a hose come in REAL handy.

(4,571 posts)daddy had a construction company too, apparently. and as soon as she got any power he was on the take. he didn't start the company with monopoly money; possibly some of the profit from that poverty-stricken farm.
A construction company owned by GOP Iowa Senate candidate Joni Ernsts father received more than $200,000 in county contracts while she served as auditor of Montgomery County, Iowa, despite a strict conflict of interest code governing the provision of contracts to family members of county officials.
A new review of records as well as an analysis of the Code of Iowa by Salon reveals that the nature of the contracts and how they were promulgated, may have violated relevant county standards.

Turns out that farm subsidies arent the only federal program Joni Ernst wont vote to kill if she wins that Senate race. Theres one more federal program she wants to keep.
Ernst likes FEMA and wants to keep it! So does her father. This even though some blue states benefit from it sometimes, too! Go figure. She wont even squawk about appropriations for it. Then again, shes a turkey, not a chicken. So she might cluck.

She worked construction too. (With dad. so I guess she means at dad's company)
As a young girl, I plowed the fields of our family farm. I worked construction with my dad. To save for college, I worked the morning biscuit line at Hardees, she said, recounting an anecdote about wearing plastic bags over her shoes to protect them on rainy school days.

she plowed the fields? lol. she drove.
and nobody who was born in 1970 got to college by working at hardees. her family paid or she got a loan. hardees could have been spending money.

it doesn't make sense to wear breadbags outside your shoes. they rip too easily, and they're slippery on ice and snow.

(3,076 posts)Do you KNOW how people wore/wear them? Clearly the poster has personal experience. Do you?
The lack of sensitivity on this and other threads tonight is jaw dropping.

I know my cousins wore them inside their shoes, over their socks. and *they* actually owned a farm, and weren't poor, but they still wore plastic inside their shoes in bad weather, to keep their feet dry and warm.

(20,572 posts)as she wants everyone to believe. Sometimes people compare themselves to the wealthy and consider themselves poor if they don't have as much. She is talking about something silly - not about lack of a home, food or sanitary conditions.

(8,964 posts)In all likelihood, they must have been used to collect and discard those vast quantities of hog testicles, the anatomical focal point / gimmick of Ernst's recent Senate campaign.

(50,553 posts)Farmers don't "discard" testicles, they put them in the freezer. No point letting good meat go to waste.
