3. We wore them over our shoes, it made putting on and taking off boots easier and kept leaky boots....

from wetting shoes and socks. You'd have to be from the buckle-boots generation to know about that!

I was mildly undernourished as a child and wore hand-me-downs until I started working. But I never wore bread bags.

If my boots were leaky, that's what happened. It may be a bit goofy, but it was better than cold, wet feet.

It was kind of common back in the day. "Money doesn't grow on trees" - moms and dads everywhere.

While your story might seem quaint and amusing to the one percenters who bankrolled you, you're really nothing special, dear. You, with your plastic smile and worn-out talking points, will never fill the seat of Tom Harkin, a genuine champion of common people. However, you did manage to pull off a rather entertaining SNL impersonation of yourself.

they were used for all sorts of storage containers, leftovers and even book cover liners.

If it might get wet and you didn't want it to, put it in a bread bag.
Can't remember what all my mother used them for, but I remember they were all over the place, with many a spare folded neatly in the upper right hand kitchen drawer.
