Two ski resorts trashed. They say 3 University of Michigan fraternities are to blame. Now the the resorts are looking at days of clean up, and thousands of dollars in repairs.
Treetops in Gaylord says members of the University of Michigan's chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity did as much as $50,000 in damage over the weekend.
And thousands more in damage at Boyne Highlands Resort, where two other University of Michigan fraternities were staying.
"We had a group of a fraternity that was visiting and had an excessive party and did damage on the resort. Food, beer, alcohol, the walls, carpet damage, ceiling broken down and furniture damage," said Barry Owens, General Manager of Treetops.

Despicable. Where are the white leaders? Is this the example that they are setting for their community? Where's Bill O'Reilly? Where's Rush Limbaugh? Where is Oilver North? Where's Miley Cyrus? Where is Tim Tebow?
We have a whole generation of white youth that are not respecting authority! White on white crime is out control!
And yet all we hear from the so-called white leaders is crickets chirping and "waaaaaahh! I want more tax cuts!"

and most of the students not being old enough to drink legally, I'm not surprised that they got that bored.

(15,480 posts)They look like a group of apes on speed and LSD rampaged through these locations.
The OP link reports that police had to escort the students out after they "wreaked havoc" in these rooms and hallways.
Like here, the ceiling tiles were ripped down and destroyed. "They had a series of rooms, a couple floors of rooms, obviously things got out of hand. We estimate the cleanup and damage is around $50,000," said Owens.
And Boyne Highlands saw damage from two more University of Michigan fraternities in up to 12 separate private condos throughout the resort.
"We're the stewards of the property and it's disturbing to us and we need to protect their investments. We are following up with U of M and they promised us swift action. We assessed a significant fee when they checked out not knowing what's in repair but we wanted to protect our owners and ourselves," said Mike Chumbler, General Manager of Boyne Highlands.
U-M staff members in the Office of Greek Life have begun meeting with the presidents of the fraternities and sororities involved.
Yes, I get the sarcasm in the replies on this thread, but it's no laughing matter. And for another thing, even should the resorts not press criminal charges on the property damage, the Michigan Attorney General should investigate and press charges on underage drinking and illegal purchase of alcohol/providing alcohol to minors.
Legal Age for Drinking/Serving Alcohol - The legal drinking age in Michigan is 21http://www.alcohollaws.org/michiganalcohollaws.html
The skewed reporting on and law enforcement reaction to this level of vandalism is an example of preferred treatment for the wealthy over the poor. Some out-of-work parent or teen gets a criminal record for stealing food/shoplifting; same for political protestors/demonstrators - but greeks with money to burn on weekend ski getaways? God forbid they get a criminal record - could impede being post-graduation employment or admission to grad schools.

(297,123 posts)"We are very disappointed in the behavior of some of our students during a weekend visit to two northern Michigan ski resorts.
I want to assure you that the organizations and the individuals involved will be held accountable for their actions.
While we are still gathering information, we understand that the damage at Treetops Resort and Boyne Highlands is expected to total in the thousands of dollars.
U-M staff members in the Office of Greek Life have begun meeting with the presidents of the fraternities and sororities involved.
We expect full payment for all damages.
The local Greek chapters are in the process of notifying their national organizations, which could bring their own sanctions."
I had to find out.. this was atrocious.. for what?!
thanks bluestate.

(15,480 posts)Sounds like all the university will do is make the fraternities/sororities pay the costs of repairs; and the national greek organizations may impose some temporary social sanctions, such as no parties in their houses for a semester. Which is no big deal because they just rent some off campus facility for parties.

(15,480 posts)Members have to have the bucks to live the Greek lifestyle, subsidize the parties, pay for your share of the booze, etc. You will find precious few, if any, work-study students on fraternity rows.
exboyfil
(17,862 posts)but why don't they press charges for vandalism? I can't understand it. In one sense what the school does is irrelevant to the crime which was committed (the chapter should be kicked off campus and the Greek members should be on probation at least).

(30,481 posts)Where are the leaders of the black community? We are in a place in society where three frats destroy property and it is automatically assumed that they are all white. Probably close to a correct assumption.
The whole leaders of the white/black community thing is nothing more than right wing rhetoric. You did a really good job of displaying how pathetic it is with your satire. Excellent job. The concept behind it is disturbing though. Not your concept.
The tit for tat done by wingers is to stoke division. That is easier than bringing people together for a greater cause.

(23,664 posts)Since these entitled fuckers have never done a days work in their lives, they ought to be made to clean up their own mess and repair the damage they did. Not have their daddy's hire some immigrants to do it for them, not pay the resorts for the cost of repairs, get out there, sweat, and get some calluses on their soft white hands.

Six University of Michigan fraternities and sororities have now been suspended by their national offices after causing thousands of dollars worth of damage at two ski resorts nearly two weeks ago, according to university officials.
The Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity was the first to be suspended last week and the remaining five were suspended over the weekend.
Sigma Delta Tau sorority, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, Alpha Phi sorority, Chi Psi fraternity and the Delta Gamma sorority were also suspended after being accused of causing more than $50,000 in damage at the Treetops Resort and condominiums at Boyne Highlands near Harbor Springs.
"This gives the university time to sort out additional details that are necessary before placing additional sanctions on the organizations or individuals involved," the university said in a statement. "The executive boards of the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association on the Ann Arbor campus have initiated their own reviews of this situation that could lead to sanctions against the fraternity and sorority chapters."
