Today is 42nd Anniv of Roe v Wade & House Republicans will pass Federal anti-abor #HR7: Comment here

I would like to make this a running thread for this bill.

This House bill was tossed in today for a Vote --when House leaders pulled the one from yesterday because it was too extreme

3 main goals: As presented by one of the male Republicans:
1.mades Hyde Amendment permanent
2. Aca conforms to Hyde amendment fully and openly-Obama said no Fed dollars used to fund abortion (as far as I know none are).
3. Make sure NO #aca plan funds abortion (which conflicts with 2nd goal and Repubs are furious) when women are receiving subsidies

But he did not say this was one of the provisions (several Dems came to the podium to oppose this provision

4. Restricts women who pay their own money for a plan to include abortion

these are main ones. Tune into c-span to listen if you want.

I don't know if I can watch the House debate on #HR7... it hurts http://www.house.gov/content/features/story2/

I think this is one up today #HR7. It was passed in the house last year--failed in Senate. So they just changed the dates on it and put it up for a vote today! Dems are furious-

Congress introduces 6 anti-abortion bills, including a ban of the procedure entirely

......S. 51 and H.R. 217 Title X Amendments

S. 51 and H.R. 217 both focus on Title X family planning grants, which provide funding to organizations (such as Planned Parenthood) that provide a comprehensive array of reproductive health services. While abortion services are a small part of the services offered, the bulk of health care includes testing for sexually transmitted diseases, pap smears, well-woman exams and infertility counseling.

If passed, these concurrent bills in the House and the Senate would prevent any funds for women’s health care from going to organizations that also provide abortions (even though the funds in question are already specifically earmarked to not pay for abortion services specifically).

The legislators behind the bills say they want to prevent taxpayer dollars from funding abortion — a moot point since this money is not allocated, and is in fact restricted from, abortion services. Rather, these bills would instead eliminate funding for many clinics and non-profits that are funded solely through these federal grants, thus disabling them from providing basic, essential health services to women.................

January 21, 2015 Bowing to the wishes of several moderates and women members, House Republican leaders pulled a controversial antiabortion bill from consideration late Wednesday night, a move sure to enrage antiabortion activists, who will descend on Capitol Hill Thursday for their annual March for Life.

The bill will be replaced by the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act, a bipartisan bill that passed the House last year and will get another vote on Thursday, the 42nd anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision. The change came after House Republican women and moderates battled against their leaders on the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, exhibiting the deepening rift between centrists and conservatives who are at cross-purposes on ..............

House GOP Cancels 20-Week Abortion Ban Vote, Introduces Another Anti-Choice Bill

.........Concerned about a possible female GOP "revolt" over a 20-week abortion ban, Republicans will pinch-hit with another bill from their deep bench of anti-choice legislation—a bill to restrict federal funding for abortion coverage. (Shutterstock)

To avoid disappointing the hordes of anti-choice marchers descending on Washington, D.C., for the March for Life, Republicans will pinch-hit with another bill from their deep bench of anti-choice legislation—a bill to restrict federal funding for abortion coverage.

The so-called “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” is considered a “less extreme” abortion bill, but it would have sweeping effects on the ability of American women to afford abortion care.

The bill would not only restrict abortion coverage for low-income women by making the Hyde Amendment permanent, it would also take away tax credits and subsidies from anyone purchasing insurance under the Affordable Care Act that covers abortion care...............

Feminist Majority Denounces the Passage of HR 7 in the House
January 29, 2014 by Feminist Majority

The Feminist Majority decries the passage of a dangerous and extreme abortion coverage ban by the US House of Representatives – the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act,” HR 7. Republicans passed HR 7 by a vote of 227-188 with 221 Republicans voting for the anti-abortion bill and 187 Democrats voting against.

Although HR 7 purports to prevent taxpayer funding for abortion, the bill actually prevents women from using their own money to purchase health insurance that includes abortion care.

“HR 7 is a blatant attack on women’s reproductive rights and an attempt to take away a woman’s ability to make personal health care decisions, including decisions about abortion,” said Feminist Majority president Eleanor Smeal. “This bill flatly puts women’s health at risk by dramatically restricting access to abortion coverage.”

HR 7 would eliminate tax credits available under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for women and families who purchase insurance plans that include abortion coverage through the newly created health insurance marketplaces. It would also force private multi-state insurance plans that participate in the marketplaces to stop providing abortion coverage and withhold the Small Business Tax Credit to those businesses that offer comprehensive health insurance – which includes abortion – to their employees

Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion throughout the country, marks its 42nd birthday on Thursday. But for women across the United States, it’s a somewhat complicated anniversary.

“On the one hand, it’s a time to reflect on an important historical moment. But it’s also a time to reflect on what is ultimately an unfulfilled promise,” Kimberly Inez McGuire, the director of public affairs for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, told ThinkProgress. “In the last couple of years, we have seen an absolute barrage of policies on a state level that are, right now, denying women that right every single day.”

According to the Guttmacher Institute, a think tank that tracks reproductive rights, states have imposed more than 200 restrictions on abortion over the past four years. Many of those legislative barriers — including mandatory waiting periods that force women to make multiple trips to a clinic, unnecessary regulations on clinics that drive them out of business, and bans on insurance coverage for abortion that increase the out-of-pocket cost of the procedure — are simply insurmountable for many women.

For the Latinas that comprise the constituency of Inez McGuire’s organization, abortion rights are far from guaranteed. A large swath of the population in Texas, where a harsh abortion law has started to take effect, live hundreds of miles from the nearest clinic. Without any means of transportation, and wary to pass by immigration checkpoints, the state’s most impoverished residents have no way to realize the rights that are technically afforded to them under Roe.........
