100 serial rapists identified after rape kits from Detroit Crime Lab are finally processed

"I was in shock. I was outraged and I just assumed kits were being tested," said actress Mariska Hargitay about the thousands of rape kits in Detroit and across the country that have been left sitting in storage without being processed, allowing rapists to remain free to attack again. And they often do.

Over 11,000 sexual assault kits, some dating back to the 1980's, were found abandoned in a Detroit Police storage facility back in 2009.

Not long after the rape kits were discovered, Worthy pushed to start the processing with Michigan State Police.

So far, 1,600 rape kits have been processed, resulting in the identification of about 100 serial rapists and ten convicted rapists, according to Worthy.

Worthy told reporters that perpetrators have moved on from Michigan to commit similar crimes in 23 other states.

It is disgusting to think that those kits were just left there...like the women that were victims of rape, by the POLICE. Shock doesn't really do justice to how I feel about it right now.

More like, I want the person(s) responsible for those rape kits to answer some questions and maybe face their own jail time.

we should just give those responsible a free pass. If it was me, the least of their worries would be about losing their jobs. There is no excuse for injustice.

I am just glad that now they are being tested, but you are so right (sadly) women are second class citizens...hard for anyone to deny that when they read about thousands of rape kits forgotten and left behind to rot.

I remember long ago getting laughed at for saying there is a rape crisis in this country.

Right back attcha!

One day this country will wake up to the horrible crimes done to women daily. IMO, this is one of the worst crimes committed in modern times. By COPS, no less.

are going to be for men and young boys who got raped, and that's just icky. Better to just throw them away and not think about it, right?

that has been going on for decades, how many officials would actually still be alive at this point?

It's an institutional problem and few of those who could do anything about it seem to be reluctant (at best) to do anything. As a nation, we have yet to admit that we are a failure on so many levels.

They throw a rape kit, the key piece of evidence, into a vault and forget about it. Yeah, just some woman. Probably lying right?

They say they can't afford to run all those kits. Yet they can afford to gear up like the Navy SEALS. MRAPS over rape kits.

We must CLEAN HOUSE OF ALL THESE DIRTY COPS AND DIRTY COMMANDERS. They are incompetent and abetting criminals, or they are criminals themselves. We must take control back of who polices our streets. How do we do that?

Sex crimes have upwards of 50% recidivism rates after they get caught. I don't think anyone has actual statistics on how likely a serial rapist is to rape again, but "serial" is right there in the name. Especially if the actually had to answer questions or give a DNA sample and then.... nothing. No more word from the police, everyone just seemed to forget.

And that most of those sexual assaults seem to be committed by the same relatively small proportion of men. Men who do it because they get away with it, and that means those who rape men or women or girls or boys or babies..............and they all seem to have a preferred sort of victim.

This gives me a heartache. How many victims have given up on any hope of seeing their attacker prosecuted?

It's obscene.

I mean, most of those women were either asking for it, pissed off the man didn't call in the morning, gave consent but was too drunk to remember, etc.

So really no big deal, right?
