SEOUL, South Korea As a math professor in North Korea, Jang Se-yul was among the nations relatively privileged classes; he got to sit in special seats in restaurants and on crowded trains, and more important in a country where many go hungry, was given priority for government food rations. Then he risked it all for a soap opera from South Korea.
The temptation in this case was Scent of a Man, an 18-episode drama about the forbidden love between an ex-convict and his stepsister. A graduate student had offered him the bundle of banned CDs smuggled into the North and, too curious to resist, Mr. Jang and five other professors huddled in one of their homes binge watching until dawn. They were careful to pull the curtains to escape the prying eyes of neighbors taught to turn in their fellow citizens for seditious activities. But they were caught anyway and demoted to manual labor at a power plant.

The kitchens with hot and cold tap water, people dating in a cafe, cars clogging streets, women wearing different clothes each day unlike us who wore the same padded jacket, day in day out, said Ms. Jeon, who lives in Seoul. Through the dramas, I learned how strange my own country was, how full of lies.

Recognizing the danger, Mr. Kims father, Kim Jong-il, who died in 2011, set up swat teams that barged into homes, cutting off the electricity before entering to prevent viewers from removing discs from their DVD players. But defectors say the suppliers have worked hard to foil inspectors, importing battery powered DVD players as well as more easily hidden flash drives.

This is an interesting article. I wish I could post more.

(29,322 posts)being caught with this would risk them to severe punishment but the curiosity urge overrides and many North Koreans have a very good understanding what North Korea is like. It is the outside world that is a mystery to them. Also the borders are also heavily patrolled by the Chinese. What often isn't mentioned is North Korean defectors face a lot of discrimination in China & South Korea as many people there view with suspicion & already have a low opinion of them anyways. With the lack of economic opportunities many resort to crime & China noticing a rise in crimes committed by "illegal immigrants" (I'm sorry to inject a US thing into this but explains the mentality) are the reasons for increased border security. Women who defect to South Korea often find employment opportunities in the corrupt & much to my surprise illegal prostitution industry, especially near US military bases. The reason why it is a surprise is because the stories I heard from those who were stationed in SK were "cold, extra duty was the worst, drinking, prostitution" and learned it was officially backed by South Korea & the US military in the early 60s and now both officially condemn, they both still tolerate it but having an illegal but tolerated sex industry inevitable lead to parasites managing the workers.
I face a lot of sympathy for North Koreans who live there & also those that choose to leave. I applaud these smugglers but it leads to a warped perception of life outside of North Korea (which is still a better understanding than no perception).

(22,000 posts)With portable DVD players, memory sticks, and small TV's the technology is available to help provide a clearer picture of what life outside North Korea is like. I fully support the launching of the balloons from South Korea over to North Korea. Anyone who sits by and says we should do nothing is only ignoring the issues faced in the country.
