http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2015/01/17/aclu-wants-curb-on-restraints.htmlThe shocking number of times that students were secluded or restrained in Ohios public schools last school year should be a call for schools to reduce their reliance on such interventions, the ACLU of Ohio said yesterday.
The Ohio Department of Education recently reported that children in Ohios public schools were secluded about 5,000 times last school year and were restrained about 9,000 times. It was the first time the department reported such data.
Columbus City Schools reported more instances of physical restraint 2,188 than any other district. Middletown schools near Cincinnati had the next-highest number of restraints, at 399. Cleveland, the district that is closest in size to Columbus, reported only 59.
Those children mostly were special-education students, and many were restrained or secluded over and over again.

OP
So you're saying that kids in Columbus are 40 times more dangerous than those in Cleveland?

if they were a danger to themselves, classmates or teachers...How many cases were students restrained that didn't fall into this category?
And what exactly is a "seclusion room"? Since that is way after my time...

(55,445 posts)4. no...I'm *saying* I want to know what the Ohio legal guidlines are for physical restraint
and how many kids were restrained even though their situation didn't meet the state guideline...
and FWIW, I wouldn't be surprised if Cleveland is under-reporting....

(39,215 posts)5. My God. Years ago when we (parents) were working to get our children out of the church basements
and into the school system this is what we were fighting when we kept them home and out of the institutions. Ohio and any other state that is still using restraint against special education students are 50 years behind the times. Good for the ACLU.
