They have spent at least 20 years demonizing Democrats - they have a whole media empire dedicated to telling them that Democrats are monsters who "hate America and lie for sport" as Ann Coulter put it. While Race factors into it I'm sure, I think you can't discount their hatred for Democrats.

but they really really needed to believe that Clinton was an evil thug.

But I do think racism plays into it. Both in how they look at Obama, but also in how they are extrapolating from that to looking at black America. I don't know exactly how to articulate this, but I think they believe that Obama is evil, and are criticizing him, and that loosens them up to be more openly dismissive and even racist towards the rest of Black America.
