Oct. 20, 2003: Gov. Bush files HB 35E, which would become known as Terris Law," after 8 p.m. It would give the governor the right to issue a one-time stay in a case the facts of which matched identically Terri Schiavos. The House passed it within two hours by a nearly 3-1 margin. The Senate passed it by a similar margin the next day.
Jeb Put Me
Through Hell
Michael Schiavo knows as well as anyone what Jeb Bush can do with executive power. He thinks you ought to know too.
By MICHAEL KRUSE January 29, 2015
CLEARWATER, Fla.Sitting recently on his brick back patio here, Michael Schiavo called Jeb Bush a vindictive, untrustworthy coward.
For years, the self-described average Joe felt harassed, targeted and tormented by the most important person in the state.
It was a living hell, he said, and I blame him.
Michael Schiavo was the husband of Terri Schiavo, the brain-dead woman from the Tampa Bay area who ended up at the center of one of the most contentious, drawn-out conflicts in the history of Americas culture wars. The fight over her death lasted almost a decade. It started as a private legal back-and-forth between her husband and her parents. Before it ended, it moved from circuit courts to district courts to state courts to federal courts, to the U.S. Supreme Court, from the state legislature in Tallahassee to Congress in Washington. The president got involved. So did the pope.
But it never would have become what it became if not for the dogged intervention of the governor of Florida at the time, the second son of the 41st president, the younger brother of the 43rd, the man who sits near the top of the extended early list of likely 2016 Republican presidential candidates. On sustained, concentrated display, seen in thousands of pages of court records and hundreds of emails he sent, was Jeb the converted Catholic, Jeb the pro-life conservative, Jeb the hands-on workaholic, Jeb the all-hours emailerconfident, competitive, powerful, obstinate Jeb. Longtime watchers of John Ellis Bush say what he did throughout the Terri Schiavo case demonstrates how he would operate in the Oval Office. They say its the Jebbest thing Jebs ever done.
The case showed he will pursue whatever he thinks is right, virtually forever, said Aubrey Jewett, a political science professor at the University of Central Florida. Its a theme of Jebs governorship: He really pushed executive power to the limits.

(14,733 posts)With Republicans up and down the chain declaring that even when you've not been charged with any crime, the state must control a private individual's life and death.
Republicans want you to have nothing but what the state grants. You cannot make decisions from cradle to grave without their leave. You cannot choose to give birth or not without them declaring they should make the decision for you, you cannot choose to live or die without them declaring they should make the decision for you.
And they hide behind a pretense that they're 'against' 'Big Government'.

What does he think he and his supporters put his wife through, if not hell?To be specific, Belsen. A slow agonising death in the knowledge that the 'caring' people around her - an otherwise physically-healthy young woman, on occasions perhaps smiling to each other, were her killers, right close up, and what must have seemed for a very long time. And what is unforgivable is that he wouldn't let her parents look after her! Well, 'unforgivable' would be hyperbole, as in a lot of cases, it would be a question of, 'Forgive em, Father, for they know not what they do.'
It's clear from photographs that she had more emotional intelligence in her little finger than the rest of them had between them. A very ugly chapter in DU and liberal America at large, as well, I regret to say. Well, before WWII, the liberal 'bien pensants', including the Socialists of Scandinavia (and surely the far right?) were great fans of eugenics.
Keynes, too, and he was a giant among giants. Bertrand Russell said of him that he had never had an argument with him without feeling rather foolish as he walked away.

(15,229 posts)tangentially, when someone had half their brain removed, their mind came to function as well, if not better. I believe they call this adaptability of the brain, 'neuroplasticity'.
