1. Bill Maher is far and away the worst choice on your list

He's not even in the same category of other worst choices. If the second-worst choice is a papercut, Maher is slow dismemberment with a dull and rusty hacksaw.

My $0.02.

Although i don't see Maher taking a daily gig, i have a very different view of Maher than you. We agree on lots, but not on this.

57. Disagreement is fine--different tastes, etc.

For my money, Maher is the broken calendar who's right once every few years, but you have to wade through so much garbage in the meantime that he's simply not worth it. And he's not all that funny either, or at least not consistently.

I know that DU holds him in high esteem, but I've seldom found him to be more than a bitter, self-important contrarian. For that matter, his dubious embrace of anti-vaccination bullshit is enough to turn me off to him altogether.

But YMMV.

62. I Think You Have One Point Of Disagreement Wrong, Orrex

He's anti FLU vaccine because he says the efficacy data is under 30%. He's not anti-vax with regard to DPT, and measles/rubella, et al.

I don't take my reading of medical data from him, so i don't much mind he is off base on that. But, he actually supports vaccination.

He just said so on his last show.

63. Gosh--his opinion sure has changed a lot since February 5th.

http://www.mediaite.com/tv/bill-maher-im-not-an-anti-vaxxer-but/

“I’m not an anti-vaxxer.” However… He still insisted he’s an “anti-flu shot guy” and has some serious problems with how the media coverage of anyone remotely questioning vaccines is basically “shut the fuck up” and “don’t ask any questions.” Guest Marianne Williamson agreed with Maher that it’s offensive to be called “anti-science” or “kooks” just for their skepticism about the pharmaceutical industry.

69. But you made it sound as though he isn't anti-vax, when he clearly is.

Which was my point.

He sort of frames it as some weirdo "personal sovereignty" issue, but in the end it's no different from any dumbass who doesn't vaccinate his kid because he's afraid of autism.

Amazingly, I know that this particular discussion about Maher has happened several times on DU over the years, so I searched for one of those and stumbled upon this one from just a few days ago. That means that he's consistent in his idiocy.

"I'm not an anti-vaxxer," he claims, but he's against vaccination. Where does that leave him, aside from talking out of both sides of his mouth?

4. Williams and Stewart should swap.

I have a feeling, though, that Williams likes it where he is, despite the suspension. He gets paid very, very well. Stewart may make as much or more because he produces as well. I don't know.

What is Craig Kilbourne doing these days?

Alum Beth Littleford could be very good.

27. Lots of good possibilities out there, but will need someone with a solid core

Jon could do outrage as well as any, but his gift was his sincere decency. Heard a discussion on Lawrence O'D last night that pointed out how he surrounded himself with characters, but he represented the "everyman" view of the news and the world at large. They do the satire and he would bring the laser focus on the central truths each day.

He will be hard to replace, he knew where to hold back for the truth to reveal itself and sink in for his viewers.

42. No, no, yes, no, no, maybe, maybe

Meyers: doesn't he have a new show on NBC?
Bee and Jones: Not sure how that would work an would probably be expensive for Comedy Central.
Williams would be great, but I'm not sure if he wants to do that. Timing is convenient and it would give the show instant credibility.
Maher: Absolutely not. He has heavy biases and is not nearly as talented as Stewart. Then again, Willmlre isn't nearly as talented as Colbert.
Gutfeld? No
McHale: Don't know a lot about him but he has a great resume.
Ferguson: He's a big star with an audience. Not sure if his talent fits the show.

HBO and all that money in order to do 4 shows a week instead of 1? Makes no sense. Ferguson would be great, Mandvi is very amusing but I'm not sure how he'd hold up to the endurance test that is such a gig. McHale I like far more than I should but not sure it is a good fit.

48. You guys are assuming that Comedy Central wants to see another left leaning political host.

John Stewart is exceptionally funny and ridiculously smart. However, John Stewart took the show in a different direction from how the show started. Craig Kilborn was the original Daily Show host, and i personally thought he was extremely funny. However, his show was not focused on politics.

Doing a show about politics and making it funny is both risky and super hard to do. The network may decide, that in the absence of a comedian with John Stewart's ability, the show is in need of a change of direction. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the Daily Show changes drastically after John's departure.

50. What? The format works, and has been very successful.

No one can ever be another Stewart, but I see no reason why CC would change the political comedy format. Especially now that Larry's new show follows The Daily Show and is heavily political.

A drastic change wouldn't be cost effective.

Each worked within a general format, but brought their own strengths.
