a fine film and my favorite of the year. It was directed by John Carney who brought us the great indy movie "Once". If you all remember this was the "movie of 2007. "Begin Again" was made for $8,000,000. Unheard of in this day and age.
It is a movie about a very strong woman and Keira Knightly stretches herself way more than "The Imitation game". She had too sing and she is not a singer. Go watch this movie and you will see why this song deserved the Oscar.

(31,133 posts)Every once in a while a "little" film like this comes along to remind that a good story trumps gimmicks and special effects. It's smart, and that was refreshing. So much mass media is either dumbed-down or similarly banal.

(4,528 posts)it deviated from the typical romantic movie. I saw many of the Oscar movies and this one was very satisfying and in ways way better. The most overrated movie of the year IMHO is "The Grand Budapest Hotel". What a bore.
i read one review from a woman and she loved Keira as keira was a strong woman and that is rare in many movies.

(12,041 posts)It may well be a great movie, but so is Selma and having heard both songs I think I can say I prefer Glory.

(4,528 posts)Here are my real thoughts. I think people like Glory because of its social significance but as a song it is kinda boring. My son who is a musician summed it up well. I heard it 3 times that is enough. Great songs have great melodies. That is why songs by Cole Porter have last 70 years or Irving Berlin. It is why i use "My favorite things" as an example. My favorite things" is a show tune that John Coltrane made a jazz classic.
Glory's melody is forgettable and that is why it won't be remembered.

(12,041 posts)I personally find the Kiera Knightly song boring, if you like it that is fine with me I am not trying to tell you that you are wrong as taste in music is very subjective but it is not my cup of tea.
To be honest Glory is not the type of music I normally listen to either, I am more of a rock guy myself, but I do think John Legend and Common are very good at what they do.
The type of music I listen to generally does not get nominated at these sorts of award shows, I love progressive rock which is a genre filled with talent yet often reviled by critics. I don't care what the critics say however, I know talent when I hear it and I know the musicians I listen to have talent and I also know that John Legend and Common have talent.

(861 posts)When I hear a song like that, one I would classify a "coffee house" type song, it makes me want to listen to the exact opposite, something with heavy guitars and classic rock -

(4,528 posts)and I love guitars as I saw Duane allman 4 times. You have to see the movie. There are 2 versions I like this one better. If you like "once" you will like this. The movie has an Indy feeling.

(4,528 posts)I listened to the closing show at the Fillmore today with the Allmans. I went that weekend and saw them. I also saw Joplin and everyone else at the time. My mom could hit 2 1/2 octaves and I grew up listening to Cole Porter. Glory was only recognized because it was politically correct but as a song it is boring.

I just thought Glory was better.
Begin Again was pretty good.

(4,528 posts)and see what song fits better. just watch the movie. This reminds of the movie Philadelphia where springsteen won the Oscar yet even Tom Hank's said neil young's song was better. Twenty years later and there is no doubt Young's song is better. Glory is "immediate" to most people because it is associated with MLK and Selma but as a song it will be forgotten. Lost Stars is a timeless topic. It deals with what everyone deals with everyday. Our internal emotions and that is forever.
My son is a musician and he said it best i listened 3 times and I'm done with Glory.
