http://www.progressive.org/news/2015/02/188016/scott-walker-big-bold-and-wrongBut dont expect a repeat of the historic protests of 2011. Walkers successful drive to effectively do away with collective bargaining by public employees is having one very visible effect: teacherswho led the massive rallies against Act 10can no longer get out of school for a day to march in protest. Nor can they attend hearings on the destruction of unions, or, for that matter, on Walkers massive budget cuts to schools.
Most of our members cant take a personal day now to stand up for their partners in labor, because its a one-sided situation in our schools, says Christina Brey of the Wisconsin Education Council (WEAC).
Even for hearings on budgets, in the past, educators could have a union day or a personal day to testify, says Brey. Now they are doubly removed from the process. They are no longer at the bargaining table, and they cant get to Madison to testify. This was the plan all alongto disempower workers.
Union membership in Wisconsin has plummeted on Walkers watch, which weakens labors political power. Thats good for Republicans, since unions are the only significant financial and organizing power pushing back against the corporations and billionaires who bankroll Republicans like Walker.

(21,475 posts)1. If I had a friend that said they would cover my back when trouble happened and then
disappeared every single time trouble occured I would not have that friend for long. That is the story of Unions. Unions are supposed to support each other. They do not and because of that they will be cast aside by their foes one at a time.. Either Unions unify and stand tall as one or they go by the wayside.. Simple as that..Right now Unions are as far apart as Republicans and Democrats are.
