I just noticed I'm getting emails from #Eventbrite informing me that people I barely know are attending specific events at specific times. Eventbrite is sending out notices that basically say "I'm not home, come rob me" without my consent.
When you check in on Facebook Google+, Yelp, 4Square, etc. it's not the same thing. On those services you can decide you want to let people know where you are and you can control who sees it and if you want to do it.
EVENTBRITE IS MAKING PUBLIC YOUR EVENTS WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND PROACTIVELY DISTRIBUTING THAT INFORMATION THROUGH THEIR EMAILS.
I WILL NEVER BOOK ANOTHER EVENT THROUGH EVENTDUMB UNTIL I KNOW THIS HAS STOPPED.
I can't believe that they do this.

(23,156 posts)but now that I have I'm sure I'd not go somewhere rather than book through them.
I just took a peek at their website, and it seems a bit like Meet Up.

(924 posts)It's used to book a lot of non profit, league types of things. Nothing wrong with that part. But in order to promote other events they tell you (I'm guessing through Facebook friends) other people who are going to events.

(18,402 posts)I just ordered two (free) tickets to a performance through them, and I've done that several times before (a lot of small and not-so-small arts organizations do their ticketing through Eventbrite).
I don't get any emails from them. Maybe check your account and click the box to receive no emails. Your concern about people's plans being broadcast without their consent is real, however. Facebook should not be giving access to your friends list to this or any other organization.

(924 posts)I can't be 100% certain, but even if you unsubscribe to their emails, they will still use your name in their emails for their events to let your people, maybe "friends" that you are going to an event. I believe the purpose is to validate the event and have your "friends" think the event is worth while if you are attending.
I'm just really pissed that they are using us as endorsement, announcing our private plans and also making public where we are going to be and when. For example, if I were attending a substance abuse/advocacy event I might not want some people to know this.
I'm kind of surprised about "crickets" with feedback on this topic, thanks for weighing in.
