Salt Lake City's only female mayor has passed away.

Deedee Corradini announced just days ago she was diagnosed with lung cancer and tonight, news broke locally that she had passed away. Corradini was 70 years old.

She served two terms as Salt Lake City's mayor during the 1990s, arriving in office at the height of the gang problem plaguing the city - and left office with the city growing (which it hadn't since the 1960s) and crime decreasing. Along the way, she was embroiled in scandal and instrumental in the city landing the 2002 Winter Olympics.

She was also behind the efforts of bringing women's ski jumping to the Olympics - which took place for the first time in last year's Winter Olympics.

Corradini was a member of the Democratic Party and served as mayor from 1992-2000. I think most locally would agree she's one of the most successful mayors in SLC history.
