Ebbing supply of injection drugs could lead to halt of Virginia executions

The demise in the General Assembly of a bill that would have kept secret the suppliers of death penalty drugs and other details of the lethal injection cocktail could lead to a halting of executions in Virginia.
The state's supply of the drugs it uses in executions is set to expire in September. But none of the eight people on death row in Virginia are scheduled to die between now and then.
<snip>
Legislation that would have made the electric chair a default execution method if lethal injection drugs were not available failed in a Virginia Senate committee last year.
Currently, under the statute, Northrup said "the only way the commonwealth could use the electric chair to electrocute someone is if the inmate chooses it."
Newest Reality
(12,712 posts)is that breathing pure helium for a short period of time provides a quick and painless death. It replaces the oxygen in the blood and there is no sensation of suffocation. You just go.
So, is there some problem with using a gas like helium? Is it to not let that become common knowledge for people who want a quick and easy way out, or did I get something wrong?
Why are "drugs" an issue in this matter when it comes to "humane" executions?
I would add that I, in now way, support the death penalty and think of it as barbaric and nothing more than state sanctioned murder.

(36,818 posts)That's why the gas chamber is no longer used. The problem is rather than breathing normally and ending their life sooner, human nature causes people to hold their breath and extend their death as long as they can. The result is extreme anxiety. Only a handful of states retain the gas chamber even as an option.

FYI: Nobody here has ever given a damn about any OP I have started. It's the DU way.
Your OP caught my eye because it is something I care about.
I welcome your presence here.

(34,131 posts)That are acceptable to the public. Unfortunately, they seem to be inventing new ways they can pretend are humane. See post #1 - or the thread about the idea to use nitrogen to kill.
Murder by the government is not a deterrent to crime and never has been. Better education and opportunities reduces crime more than anything else - I wish we would spend more on those than one defending the right for the state to kill.
