Russia Threatens The UN: Stop Recognizing LGBT Spouses

http://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/uncucumbered/russia_threatens_the_un_stop_recognizing_lgbt_spouses

Russia has told U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to stop recognizing the spouses of its LGBT employees or they will force the matter to a vote.

Last June, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon issued an administrative order allowing the partners of gay and lesbian U.N. employees to receive spousal benefits if their marriage or civil union is legally recognized by their home country, even if the country to which they are posted does not recognize such relationships. ForeignPolicy.com is reporting that Russia is now demanding the U.N. rescind that order. Russian diplomats announced yesterday at a meeting of the U.N.’s budget committee, that Ban Ki-Moon's order violates a 2004 U.N. General Assembly resolution that leaves it to the government of the county where the U.N. employee is posted to determine whether their same-sex spouse is eligible for benefits.

Russia seems to be serious about pursuing this complaint. Several weeks ago it issued an "aide-mémoire" to all U.N. members charging that Ban’s executive order:

“violates the sovereign rights of members states to determine the legal framework of (the) life of their citizens.”

Hey there, Putin-worshippers! How's that workin' out for ya? </dr-phil>

Not the pain of having their rights denied, mind you. This apparently is much worse.

Russia is one of the most powerful countries at the UN. It will be very interesting to see how the UN responds.

Russia's government is pure evil.

Worse than Iran, approaching that of North Korea.

Personally, I lurves me the "The US is the same and even worse" arguments. They are some kind of special. But, then they will remind us how they are true allies to the cause because they +1 an article about GLBT issues or commented on the heinous nature of homophobia...in the US. One argument they have seemingly abandoned is "what about Uganda!?!?" They loved throwing that BS at certain LGBT'ers, until they realized, the ones they were tossing their monkey feces at were actually all over threads, in many cases starting them, about LGBT rights all over the world, including Uganda. Ooops!

I shouldn't laugh, not even 5 years ago we were having this problem here in America. Maybe it's a good thing that Putin sounds so ridiculous right now to everyone, as it's a sign of real progress.

...And I admit I've been gone for a long time, but Putin has a following now? Or is it just leftover Snowden hate as upward posts suggest?

If, as is the case here, it is not possible to make an argument on his behalf without getting banned as a bigot, they keep silent.

But they follow Russian state media rules: no criticism of Putin, ever.

They are a mix of Russian ethnonationalists and people who still wear Team Moscow jerseys due to Cold War loyalties.
