Sanshiro Sugata (姿三四郎 Sugata Sanshirō?, aka Judo Saga) is the directorial debut of the Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa. First released in Japan on 25 March 1943 by Toho film studios, the film was eventually released in the United States on 28 April 1974. The film is based on the novel of the same name written by Tsuneo Tomita, the son of prominent judoka Tsunejirō Tomita. It follows the story of Sanshiro, a strong stubborn youth, who travels into the city in order to learn Jujutsu. However, upon his arrival he discovers a new form of self-defence: Judo.

The main character is based on Saigō Shirō.
The film is seen as an early example of Kurosawa's immediate grasp of the film-making process, and includes many of his directorial trademarks, such as the use of wipes, weather patterns as reflections of character moods, and abruptly changing camera speeds. The film itself was quite influential at the time, and has been remade on no fewer than five occasions. It spawned a sequel, Sanshiro Sugata Part II, which was released in 1945 and also directed by Kurosawa. In popular culture, the movie is the source of the parody character Segata Sanshiro, an advertising mascot created to sell the Sega Saturn video game system.

the violence and injuries of Jujutsu. It is almost purely a defensive sport. Not very good at it myself, I was very good at taking falls. I was once in a small educational film as the person being thrown by the master. I did well in learning how to land without injury. The person in the above film could have saved his ribs by learning how to slap the floor as he landed. I once had a lesson by a 70 something year old master that was amazing in his skill at that age. He was an Olympic coach way back when. Once you get past the hype, Rhonda is pretty amazing in the arts.

on how to land properly without getting hurt.

The whole thing was plainly set up from the get-go.

Any responsible martial artist would have demonstrated this on a mat and made sure the opponent was prepared.

This video isn't funny. She wasn't responding to a real insult/challenge.

That woman was totally irresponsible and her mother should reprimand her.

Judo is preformed on a mat, so people being thrown have some place soft to land on. The second thing is before anyone learns anything in Judo, they are taught HOW TO LAND. It is drilled into each student until they have learned the proper way to land.

I know this, I took 15 years of Judo as a kid.

It was obviously a set up as they were both smiling and joking.

That she didn't make sure it was done on a mat and didn't give him some coaching on how to land means she was grossly irresponsible.

It is 100% her fault.

Everyone knows she's an excellent fighter, but if any man steps into the ring with her he has lost already. If he beats her, he'd be criticized for beating up on a woman and his fellow fighters would just say "oh, you beat a girl". If he lost, he'd never hear the end of it.
Of course, the right sized paycheck might change a mind.
