Alaska Republican’s suggestion: ‘Predator’ wolves would solve your community’s ‘homeless problem’

Rep. Don Young (R-AK) was on the defensive after suggesting gray wolves as a means of fighting homelessness, the Washington Post reported on Thursday.

“The grey wolf in fact is a predator that’s killing the cloven hoof animals,” Young told Interior Secretary Sally Jewell on Thursday. “And we’ve got 79 congressmen sending you a letter, haven’t got a damn wolf in their whole district. I’d like to introduce them to your district. I introduce them in your district, you wouldn’t have a homeless problem any more.”

The remark came during a meeting of the House Natural Resources Committee regarding Jewell’s department’s budget. The letter in question was sent to Jewell a day earlier. The committee’s ranking member, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ), was among the 79 signatories calling on Jewell to list gray wolves as threatened under the Environmental Protection Act.

“Gray wolves are still subject to intense persecution where they are not protected,” Grijalva said in a statement. “They currently inhabit only five percent of their historical range and are clearly still threatened with extinction.”

During the meeting, Young mocked Grijalva’s appeal to the department.

DOES NOT MEAN the entire earth is going to heat up like a toaster oven, uniformly! I've been trying to get them to use the term Climate Change, since the term Global Warming is too scary for them to handle.

Politics often involves a bit of arm-twisting, but footage of Alaska Congressman Don Young today shows him literally twisting the arm of a young man in a hallway of the U.S. Capitol. An NBC producer named Frank Thorp caught the episode on video and released it on social media. The news outlet Roll Call also published a photo. After the congressman lets go of his wrist, the aide makes a face indicating either surprise or pain. Young’s office released this written statement:

“While returning to the GOP conference meeting to discuss the ongoing situation on our southern border, I was caught off guard by an unidentified individual who was physically blocking me from reentering the room. Regardless, my reaction was wrong and I should have never placed my hands on the young man.”

“He kind of snarled at me and said, ‘Don’t you ever touch me. Don’t ever touch me. The last guy who touched me ended up on the ground dead,’” said Dunbar.

“The grey wolf in fact is a predator that’s killing the cloven hoof animals,” Cloven hoof animals? Is this some kind of a fundie reference? I'm not real conversant with their terms…just seems a bit odd in context.

…6"Any animal that divides the hoof and has the hoof split in two and chews the cud, among the animals, that you may eat. 7"Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these among those which chew the cud, or among those that divide the hoof in two: the camel and the rabbit and the shaphan, for though they chew the cud, they do not divide the hoof; they are unclean for you.

So basically, the wacky Mr. Young is angry at wolves for eating the "clean" animals approved by god for human consumption.

Deranged as he is, I think a lot of the "kill the wolves" mentality comes from a similar place; sort of a dumb-dumb urge to eliminate all predators because they're competition for meat. Hunting groups in Alaska and other places often want the wolves culled to keep the herds up. Nevermind that wolves actually strengthen herds by picking off the old and sick. The important thing, to stupid people, is that humans have absolutely no competition for anything.

stupid people will have absolutely no competition for anything. Besides wolf hunters, what other group does this apply to?
