Kelly Gissendaner Left Message for Kids Before Execution Was Postponed

http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/lethal-injection/kelly-gissendaner-recorded-last-message-execution-was-postponed-n318751

Two hours before her scheduled execution — which was ultimately called off because of cloudy lethal injection drugs — Kelly Gissendaner made a final statement in which she expressed love for her kids and thanked her legal team....

When Gissendaner, 46, made the recording, she was waiting to hear if the U.S. Supreme Court would step in and halt her execution after a series of lower courts and the state parole board had declined to stop it.

The justices had not yet made a decision when Gissendaner got an unexpected reprieve: Someone noticed the solution of pentobarbital that was to be used looked cloudy and the execution was postponed.

The execution of a second prisoner has since been postponed while Georgia has the drugs — obtained from a compounding pharmacy behind a veil of secrecy — analyzed.

one caller, a retired corrections officer, said he was also against the death penalty, as death row if filled with nothing but poor black and white people.

Prior to Gissendaner’s trial, Owen entered an agreement not to seek parole within 25 years, pled guilty, and received a sentence of life in prison. Owen testified at Gissendaner’s trial that it was she who first raised the idea of murder and that she later raised the idea again several other times. Owen suggested divorce as an alternative, but Gissendaner insisted upon murder because she believed she would receive insurance money from her husband’s death and because she believed he “wouldn’t leave [her] alone by just divorcing him.” Gissendaner had previously stated to Owen’s sister that she intended to use the victim’s credit to get a house and then “get rid of him.”
