LINCOLN — Dozens of people brought their pain and their hope to the State Capitol on Friday as they implored lawmakers to legalize medical marijuana in Nebraska.

Some came in wheelchairs, some wore helmets as protection from seizure-induced falls, others were accompanied by assistance dogs. All asked for a chance to legally use in their home state a drug they say has provided relief from suffering in 23 other states.

“Forcing families to uproot and move to another state so that their children can receive potentially life-changing treatment is inexcusable,” said Marie Rieke of Lincoln, whose 2-year-old granddaughter, Alaina, suffers from severe epilepsy that could potentially be helped by hemp oil.

But medical professionals urged members of the Judiciary Committee to wait for scientific studies to prove whether medical marijuana truly delivers on the promise some say it holds.
