http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/10/us/secede-republic-claims-texas-never-joined-us.html?_r=0Its monthly meetings are called joint sessions of congress. Members have minted their own silver and gold currency and carry ID cards warning police officers they are diplomatic representatives of the nation of Texas. Its vice president, a retired telephone company worker, sent a letter in 2011 to the governor of Oklahoma, informing her that she faced indictment because her states counties and territories were trespassing inside the geographical boundaries of its nation.
Such letters have failed to convince the authorities of the groups novel belief that Texas never legally became part of the United States and remains a separate nation. As a result of that belief, the group claims it had a duty to form a government, with a state department and with a court system run in part by a chiropractor in the Houston suburb of Katy.
Members say their government is neither a mock system nor a prank, but a legitimate authority with executive, legislative and judicial branches. They spend their time sitting through eight-hour congressional meetings and debating legislation. (The letter to Oklahoma officials refers to Senate Bill No.1102-1201.) Still, officials who receive one of the groups many letters typically just throw it in the trash can, acknowledged the Republics president, John Jarnecke, 72.
Amazing.

(42,641 posts)The upside of secession:
1) The average IQ in the US would probably rise by a few points.
2) The Us would have two fewer welfare-queen states that take in far more in federal tax revenue than they provide.
3) Rick Perry, Louie Gohmert, and Ted Cruz would be regional politicians from another country.
4) I am certain there are other good reasons to let them go

(24,761 posts)The balance of Congressional power may well go back to the Democrats, especially if Texas takes Oklahoma with it.

(25,816 posts)Texas , despite the jokes, has many great Democrats. Arizona has Raul Grijalva: from Wiki:
Grijalva co-chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus with Keith Ellison of Minnesota[7][8] and in 2008 was among 12 members rated by National Journal as tied for most liberal overall.[9] On the ideological map of all House members at GovTrack's website, Grijalva is ranked farthest to the left.[10] Liberal and progressive activist groups routinely give him high marks for his voting record. Grijalva received a 100 percent score from Americans for Democratic Action, Peace Action, the League of Conservation Voters, the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Arab American Institute, and several other notable groups in recent years.[11] With the start of the 114th Congress, Grijalva became the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Natural Resources.
So, I say, as I have said here before, NO STATE BASHING. All states have at least a few idiots, and all have many true progressive Democrats. Don't get me started on Illinois (kidding).

(42,641 posts)We actually have a dedicated "Governor's cell" at Marion Penitentiary.
My post was a joke except for the part about Texas being a "welfare queen" among states.
As far as it goes, Texas is so gerrymandered that if the Congressional Districts had been drawn by an independent commission Texas would probably be nearly blue at this point. Goes to show how important it is to vote in ALL elections, not just Presidential ones.

(1,827 posts)I have always heard that Texas was in the US by treaty and that they could end the treaty if they wished.
And, I think you mean "legally secede." Any state could illegally secede if it were willing to fight Washington.

(5,523 posts)The only problem I see is that we will probably have to send them foreign aid. Can't have a failed state as our neighbor.

Only thing I can think of is that maybe your thread has drawn the attention of a bunch of freepers or lurkers from some other conservative site.

(94,499 posts)FWIW - If you want to have some fun, show up at their next meeting, and announce that you're the new President. What basis do they have to challenge your claim?
