Biden: GOP’s Iran Letter Undermines U.S.

Vice President Joe Biden slammed 47 Republican senators who signed a letter urging Iran to reject any nuclear deal with President Obama, calling it “beneath the dignity of an institution I revere.” The letter, organized by Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, threatened that any deal reached between U.S. and Iran would need congressional approval or it could be undone after Obama left office in two years. “The decision to undercut our president and circumvent our constitutional system offends me as a matter of principle,” Biden said Monday. “As a matter of policy, the letter and its authors have also offered no viable alternative to the diplomatic resolution with Iran that their letter seeks to undermine.” Meanwhile, seven Republican critics remain concerned the letter could backfire in the GOP push to undo a possible nuclear deal. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker, a Republican from Tennessee, said it might detract from a bill he has sponsored mandating a congressional vote to approve or reject an Iran nuclear deal.
