Republicans defend Arkansas rep who ‘rehomed’ adopted girls with a rapist

A pair of Arkansas Republicans have stepped up to the plate to defend an embattled state lawmaker accused of “rehoming” his adopted daughters to a rapist, using Facebook to attack the media coverage of their colleague.

On Wednesday, the Arkansas Democratic Party called upon Rep. Justin Harris (R) to resign following revelations that he and his wife made the “unilateral decision to move two of his adopted daughters into another family’s home” where one of the girls was sexually assaulted. The call for his resignation comes following a week of stories reported by the Arkansas Times, — which originally broke the story — containing interviews with Department of Children and Families staffers, previous foster parents, and baby sitters, saying Harris and his wife mistreated the two girls and have lied to the press about their dealings with the DCFS.

On Facebook, Arkansas Secretary of State Mark Martin (R) got into an argument with a fellow commenter on a post linking to an Times story on Harris, saying she was “making a judgement based upon misinformation by a vile socialist anti-Christian propaganda blog about one of the most righteous seeming, humble, and gentle men I have ever met in my life.”

In a series of comments screen-captured by the woman, Martin responded to her comment that Harris gave away the children “like they were animals he picked up at a shelter,” by saying you have to have adopted a foster child to know what Harris and his wife had gone through.

Republican lunatics have truly taken over the asylum in what was once one of America's most solidly Democratic states

His crimes are legion. Unfortunately, not too many of them are illegal or prosecute-worthy in the eyes of the state, despite their disgusting nature.

"Exorcism" of your and other people's children? Not a crime. Just crazy.
Locking children in their bedrooms? Not a crime. Just cruel.
Lying to the media? Not a crime. Just something that happens every day.
Lying to DHS and child welfare workers? Prove it.

Taking federal education dollars for your crackpot religious school? Now THAT'S a goddamn crime.
Cashing DHS checks intended for the upkeep of your adopted children after you'd relocated them to a rapist's home? That's a goddamn crime.

I wish the book could be thrown at him for all of the above, and more. But I think the state's going to be lucky to be able to dislodge him from his committee-ship and office, much less arrest him at all. Now that the GOP wagons are circling, he's part of the well-protected monster class.

Disgusted. Just disgusted.

Harris adopted the children in the first place over the strenuous objections of the therapeutic foster families with whom they had first been placed. The foster families felt that the Harrises did not have the necessary experience and training to deal with children who had been so severely traumatized in their family of origin. They also felt that the busy outside commitments and presence of male children in the home would not be good. They allege that Harris pressured the director of the Department of Children's Services (whose budget he partially controls) to override their recommendations and place the girls with the Harrises. The Harrises later attributed their inability to parent the girls effectively to the girls' being possessed by demons, which is one reason they got rid of them. They caused so much unnecessary disruption and trauma to kids who had already been through so much abuse. As bad as this is , what is even worse is that this freak and his wife run a preschool!

has anyone else noticed something...disturbing...about Harris's appearance? Something he may be hiding, or covering up for, or ashamed of? The needle on my spidey-sense shot into the red when I first got a look at his cheruby gob. Something doesn't add up here.

looks like he's wearing the package Chris Christie came in. I laughed in spite of myself.

I still think there's something disturbing about his appearance. That soft pudginess...it ain't right. I've known a few people who had that quality, and it was almost like it disguised some inner corruption.

Not that that contributes anything meaningful to the discussion. I hope he gets put away for the rest of his sorry life. Won't happen, but I can hope.

...I've kinda gotten used to that particular "soft pudgy" quality that l lot of right-wing conservative men have. It's as though they're all aspiring to look like Rush Limbaugh. Or Chris Christie. Or just the package they each came in.
