Following Vice News sit-down on climate change with Vice President Joe Biden, the Brooklyn-based outlet has a wide-ranging interview with President Barack Obama scheduled to drop on Monday.
In a short trailer for the longer video released Friday, Obama can be seen talking about gridlock in Congress and legalized marijuana, but he also makes his harshest comments yet about the letter sent from 47 Republican senators to the leaders of Iran.
Previously, Obama said, Its somewhat ironic to see some members of Congress wanting to make common cause with the hard-liners in Iran. Its an unusual coalition. But in the interview with Vice, he took his criticism further, telling Vice co-founder and CEO Shane Smith, Im embarrassed for them.
For them to address a letter to the Ayatollah, who they claim is our mortal enemy, the president said. And their basic argument to them is, dont deal with our president because you cant trust him to follow through on an agreement, thats close to unprecedented.
Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), who was the driving force behind the letter, as well as colleagues like Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), have said they have no regrets about addressing and sending the letter, which they say simply attempted to explain the U.S. constitutional system to Iran ahead of a major nuclear deal, directly to that countrys leadership.
