Arkansas Judge Mauled by Family's Pet Zebra

An Arkansas judge remained in a Little Rock hospital Tuesday after he was attacked by his family's pet zebra, authorities said.

The man was attacked Sunday night by a zebra owned by his father, a Searcy police spokesman said. The Daily Citizen newspaper of Searcy, in White County northeast of Little Rock, identified the man as state District Judge Mike Derrick. The court clerk's office confirmed to The Associated Press that Derrick sustained injuries to an eye and an arm. His condition wasn't available Tuesday.

Authorities wouldn't discuss details of the attack — including any explanation for why a family happened to own and maintain a zebra on private property. Police said they were pursuing no action because the incident appeared to be an accident involving an animal legally owned by Derrick's family.

Since zebra are herd animals, I suppose the zebra was ticked off about the miserable life he was leading, by himself. Who the phuck keeps a zebra?

I worked for a former Arkansas judge at one time, when he was appointed to head my federal agency. He was a somewhat portly gentleman and my son, upon being introduced to him at the agency picnic, told him he looked "just like Boss Hogg." Of course, that's funnier now than it was at the time.

Seems some people raise them as pets. And it is best to not annoy the Zebra.

http://www.wikihow.com/Raise-Zebras

Applying for a zebra is usually very hard. You have to at least have 2 years experience for caring exotic animals (including one year for the animal you want to own which is the zebra). You will also need to be interviewed including everyone in the family about it so be prepared. Don't forget that your house needs to be suitable for a zebra.
Zebras can only be pets in some states only. If you have a zebra as an illegal pet, huge penalties may apply.

See if you have the right amount of money and requirements. You'll need $3000 - $7000 for only one zebra. You'll need a huge property enough to fit one zebra. It's great if you actually live in the safari rather than the city. You'll also need to build a humongous and strong fence around the place so they don't escape.

If you can't wait to buy a zebra, move to West Virginia or Wisconsin. These two states have only a few restrictions on exotic-pet ownership, and you don't need permission from the local governments to start a zebra farm.

Be ready when they turn violent. If you annoy them or if they are angry at you, they can attack you. They usually attack you with their teeth or kick you with their hooves. When owning a zebra and looking after one, it's always better to have more than 4 people so they could help you out during a fight. Never look at a zebra alone.
If you do get attacked, it best to run or flee from the scene.

... it's still a really bad idea.

People like him would appear to be why we need laws to restrict the ownership of animals you would have to be crazy to want.

If zebras could be domesticated, you'd think any of several herd keeping tribes in Africa, and then the British, would have figured it out.

It's not for lack of trying, either

All attempts to domesticate zebras have been abject failures.

They are wild animals, not pets
