Kevin, Orange Tabby Cat Missing Since 2013, Ends Epic Trek in California Desert

This is the story of a cat with an extreme case of wanderlust.

It ends happily.

His name is Kevin. The orange tabby was adopted in June 2013 by a woman in Anderson, South Carolina. She kept him as an indoor cat. "But he acted unhappy," she later told rescuers.

One day, she let him go outside. He vanished. Months passed. "I assumed someone must have picked him up," the owner, Cheryl Walls, recalled.

On March 4, a woman was driving a U-Haul trailer across the California/Arizona border and was stopped by a food and agriculture inspector, officials said. The inspector looked inside and heard muffled mewing.

The driver said the cat wasn't hers, and had no idea how it got there.

He spends most of his time sitting at the window by the bird feeders, but you can tell he's plotting something.

safe inside and never let them out to wander the neighborhood. House cats get bored and then they act out in frustration. Her cat just needed more stimulating play activities to get his senses engaged, and after a few minutes teasing him with some fun toys, he would have been a tired, but happy little guy.

This little guy could have been so used to being outside it was hard to change....this long trek probably did it!

showed up at the house, waled right in thru the front door, past the dog, who strangely did not even move,
moved right in, stayed with us for about a year, and vanished one afternoon.
He was a very bold cat, would walk up to visitors, jump into their pickups, or the hood of their car. We often had to help him down from the roof, cause he would go from car top to roof easily.

the day he disappeared was right after the gas meter reader guy showed up in his pickup.
I truly believe he adopted someone else easily.

But...maybe he is heading to Cal. too.

Never had a feral/stray like that, although my males will disappear at times, especially in the summer...even when fixed...the wanderlust is pretty strong in some of them.

named Sputnik. Couldn't keep him in the house. He'd get out by any means necessary. He knew the sound of mu truck and would come running to the front of the house to greet me when he heard me come home. He had a wild streak and got into a fight with something bigger that left a cut down his chest. It became infected and he couldn't shake what ever got into the cut. He was the official greeter in our house.
