TIPP CITY — Teachers in the Tipp City school district voted to unionize, in part to improve communications with the board of education and the administration, a teachers’ spokesman said.

District teachers voted 94 to 54 in an election by mail to form a collective bargaining unit. The vote was coordinated by the State Employment Relations Board.

Joe Bellas, a teacher and spokesman for the Tipp City Education Association, said Thursday that concern over staff turnover was part of the reason behind the teachers’ decision.

“We know that we have a very serious problem, that teacher turnover in Tipp City schools was much higher than normal last year. It was a major concern to us, the community and the administration as well,” Bellas said.
