Jim Letherer, a one-legged observant Jew who walked 50 miles on crutches from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965 to support the rights of African-Americans in the Civil Rights Movement. During the march, Letherer helped keep spirits high by unswervingly shouting out cadence for his remaining leg, chanting, Left, left, left!

Jim Letherer was an American civil rights activist and Orthodox Jew.He marched with Martin Luther King Jr in the Walk Against Fear in 1966. Letherer had one leg and marched with King the entire 50 miles.

I did 21 once. Walk for hunger. Longest I had done. Got back to our T stop. My legs had seized up. I could barely get off the train.
Kudos for Jim. His strength and his belief for what is right.

Still painful to walk and climb, carry that pack!
