Judge strikes down Wisconsin law requiring abortion providers get hospital privileges

Article by: Associated Press
Updated: March 20, 2015 - 7:20 PM

MADISON, Wis. — A federal judge has struck down a Wisconsin law requiring abortion providers to get hospital admitting privileges.

U.S. District Judge William Conley ruled Friday that the 2013 law is unconstitutional.

Planned Parenthood and Affiliated Medical Services had sued the state, arguing the requirement will force AMS's Milwaukee clinic to close because its doctors can't get admitting privileges.

There might have been a time when it was common for a GP to bypass the ER/triage and get the patient admitted on his/her own authority. I don't know about that.

But in my experience recently, it seems that very few docs who are not actually part of the normal in-hospital rotation have such privileges. Maybe a medical professional can weigh in here with a more informed view.

These teapublicans make me so damned angry. Finally, a ruling that will help the doctors who provide these essential services.

Repug presidents for soooooooooo many issues.

On October 29, 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Conley to serve on the United States District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. Conley would fill the vacancy created by Judge Barbara Brandriff Crabb's announcement in March 2009 that she would take senior status.
