Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsJust a heads up: We're in another war in the Middle East now.
The US is officially working with the Sunni Arab coalition that is now intervening in the Yemeni civil war by bombing the shit out of the country. The US is supplying intelligence (targeting) and logistical support.
Here's the freedom-loving friends of democracy we're aligned with in this:
The Egyptian military coup regime.
The Saudi monarchy.
The Jordanian monarchy.
The Arab Gulf States monarchies.
The Sudanese international war criminal regime.
The Pakistani military regime (barely hidden behind a tattered democracy).
And we're not allying with them to fight ISIS or Al Qaeda, but to pick sides in an internal Yemeni conflict.
Thanks, Obama.

(13,184 posts)...they were dropping bombs on their neighbor to fight "Houthi aggression."
Houthis are Yemenis. The Saudis and the rest of that bunch are not.

(42,641 posts)There is a well known (except in Washington D.C.) connection between Saudi Arabian money and ISIS. So we are funding both sides of the conflict. Just like the Iran/Iraq war. Great for the war whores, bad for everyone else.

(2,161 posts)US war in Yemen is not at all new.
It's all part of the 'war on terror', the 2001 authorization of military force anywhere in the world, anytime.
I support Congresswoman Barbara Lee's efforts to repeal the 2001 AUMF.
Comrade Grumpy
(13,184 posts)This is the US sided with a bunch of Arab dictatorships who are intervening in a Yemeni civil war that has very little to do with Al Qaeda. We're helping the Saudis bomb the capital city.
Dems to Win
(2,161 posts)The US has been closely allied with the Yemeni leadership all this time, as the Yemen leaders allowed the US to bomb whomever they pleased and call them al Qaeda. Not a recipe for a stable country.
Every drone strike creates more enemies for the US, and for those domestic leaders that allow the US to terrorize populations using drones.
Comrade Grumpy
(13,184 posts)But that wasn't the Houthis. They're from Shia-dominanted north Yemen, which used to be its own country.
In fact this current civil war seems to leave the Al Qaeda types on the sidelines. It's the current, American-backed president (who has now retreated to Saudi Arabia) against the old, Houthi-backed president. Meanwhile, AQAP does its thing.

Comrade Grumpy
(13,184 posts)Now we are intervening in a civil war not involving AQAP. And we in direct alliance without just about the entire roster of Arab despot regimes.

It just isn't an issue for Democrats, it seems--or an issue in the coming election.
