(291 posts)about how to deal with the IRS. I think that was like a week ago. I was busy and did not have time to turn the channel, and I had to leave the house to attend to business. So of course I did not watch the segment. It was just one of the headlines at the beginning of the show. Now I thought that was outrageous.

(14,560 posts)in the 70s, we had to go to church every day, prayer before breakfast ...
There is NOTHING about this modern political version of religion that I was exposed to then.
The problem is this ...
The 80s saw the strategical political radicalization of the evangelicals.
The 90s saw the turn to to where the republicans used religion to cull bigotry and spin it into their victimization.
There was some exposure to the disconnect between what Christianity has mostly been about and how it was being spun politically.
At the same time, primarily driven by republican messaging, this country is now a quarter century into this projection thing, where everyone is obsessed with personal responsibility - more accurately what they expect OTHERS to be responsible for, while using whatever wild eyes thing they can grab at justify their NOT being responsible.
I guess what I am saying is, I witnessed this bullshit being spun in the 90s and was mystified why it was accepted then.
25 years later,it remains and in fact remains UNCHALLENGED.
We might see it clear as day.
But, republicans have been in their shit for so long, this is what they KNOW. There is going to be no convincing them, like every other bullshit the party has spun, it is their reality.
And, the rest of the country is operating as such a distracted and self intersted level, they just burp and tend to take what the republicans push because they scream it so virulently.

(14,560 posts)But, I find that while it may not be the religious route, their bullshit culls people in countless other ways.
I have a LOT of 30 something friends/acquaintances who have no time for bashing gays, but line up as conservatives over "the big spending liberal" or PC liberal bullshit ... Not to mention guns.
While the influence of the fundies may fade, they still are masters at tapping the lesser element of humankind.

(1,397 posts)Christianity and Islam are EVANGELIZING religions. That is, their religion REQUIRES its members to convert un-believers. An un-believer is someone who is not of your faith. If you do not work to convert the un-believers, their lost soul will be on your account and you may go to Hell along with the lost people you did not try to convert.
I am not making this up.
I was reared in a biblethumping Southern Baptist household where the emphasis was on "throw out the lifeline, someone is slipping away," "the harvest is many and the workers are few," "bringing in the sheaves," "go into the highways and by-ways of life and bring in the lost sheep." and on and on and on.
That's why they knock on your door, invite themselves in, and won't take "no" for an answer when you tell them to leave you alone.
If they don't save your soul, their's is in danger.
All that other stuff -- feed the hunger, care of the widow and orphan, blessed are the peacemakers?? All that is a poor second to bringing in the lost.
I second that as a survivor of the same.

Let's call it what it is - abject stupidity and willful ignorance.
