I had an aunt who never married because her parents would not consent to her marrying a protestant (they were catholic) in the 1940's. She lived in her parents home caring for them until they passed and continued living there alone after.
Her beau and she 'kept company' and had a friday movie, and Sunday supper until she died back in the early 70's.
