Religious persecution in Indiana...?

The new law signed by Governor Pence was signed under the pretense of "religious liberty". In truth, it is nothing more than a political ploy to fire up the religious base of the Republican Party before the next election.

Tell them they are being "persecuted". Otherwise, how would they know?

The entire maneuver by the Legislature and the Governor of Indiana was intended to create controversy and to motivate the religious right to get to the polls in the next election. If they had to discriminate against some people in the process, then so be it.

With all the problems in the world and in our country, Republicans prefer to talk about issues like Hillary's emails or religious persecution. They are a Party searching for an issue.

1. That's why they are scrambling now

They assumed this would be a politically strong move; but now that it's blown up they are having to backtrack. I'm guessing the original calculus when "We'll shore up the Republican Base and draw in some from the middle with a move that won't cost us anything politically."

Now, of course, they are paying a cost politically. The move infuriated those who opposed it, and the bad press is pushing those who might normally just ignore it to oppose it. So what do you do? So you either stick to your guns, and write those votes off, or you cave in hopes of getting some of those votes back, knowing that the Republican base will be pissed off.

2. I think this overlooks the existing legal discrimination and current state of bigoted treatment of

LGBT people in Indiana and 28 States. They already discriminate. It's already legal, and the residents of those 29 States are well established as either supporting that or being indifferent to it, many seem unaware that such discrimination exists, as they will lecture LGBT people that our rights have nothing to do with money or the economy.
Here comes the list of States, where LGBT people have no protections in employment:
