Alabama Senator-Doctor Will Finally Get Revenge On New Mom Who Died Under His ‘Care’

Yet another Conservative sociopath in the halls of power.

Sen. Larry Stutts, MD, an OB/GYN who just took office in January, has introduced a bill to repeal a law inspired by the death of one of his patients. Needless to say, Stutts insists that he just wants to keep the state from interfering with the precious doctor-patient relationship, for freedom; just please don’t anybody look too hard at how that doctor-patient relationship worked out 17 years ago for one of his patients who died, we think we mentioned that, didn’t we?

Senator Dr. Larry Stutts (R-Sheffield) has offered SB289, which would repeal a woman’s legal right to remain in the hospital for 48 hours after a normal live birth and 96 hours if the birth was cesarean or presented complication. His bill would also repeal State law requiring physicians to notify woman in writing that her mammogram showed dense tissue that may mask breast cancer.

Stutts took to Facebook to defend this measure saying, “I am proud to say that I am hard at work removing one-size-fits-all Obamacare-style laws from the books in Alabama.”

Never mind that the law that he wants to repeal was passed a decade before Obamacare. And especially never mind that the law was passed after one of his patients, Rose Church, died of complications that almost certainly would have been detected had she been able to stay in the hospital for 48 hours after delivering a healthy baby girl on December 1, 1998:

What about the medical community? What happens when a doctor breaks the Hippocratic Oath? Or is he rebelling against that too?

They only want the people that they don't care about to die.

If it was his wife that had been turned out of the hospital, instead of his patient, he'd be pushing to reinforce the law.

Therein lies the key difference between "conservatives" and liberals. Conservatives only care about the shit that directly affects them. Liberals care about the shit that affects everybody.

Look at some of the extreme for profit corporations like the Cancer Treatment Centers of America who require you to show them all of your financial and insurance information before they will agree to take your case.

It's not "the people that they don't care about", it's the people who can't continue to pump their financial blood into the system. When it's totally drained I can guarantee you that you'll be wheeled out to the curbside.

You're totally right, but I wasn't just talking about their family. The wealthy are definitely the people who conservatives care about the most. To them, how much a person has is the total of their worthiness as a person.

that we go back to the days of 24+ hrs after birth and the hospital (for cost) gets to throw you out?

Or did he campaign on the "send me to the senate so I can "clear" my name" (and send mom's out the door of the hospital right after birth)?

Wonder how deeply he is invested in hospitals?

Tue Mar 31, 2015, 03:20 PM
Mar 2015

I don't get it -- his patient died and now he wants to make it so that women can die from lack of information regarding their tests or from lack of proper care?
If his patient could have survived had she remained in the hospital, why would he want other women to be sent home?
If a woman had a mammogram result that required additional diagnostics, why would he want to deny her that knowledge?
Additionally, he is years away from the original law which was written to spare women like his patient.
He is an ob-gyn, specializing in women's health, and this is how he views women? As political pawns to satisfy his political leanings? He is a sadist. Not a doctor.

The AMA is in business to collect fees from doctors, not to punish malefactors. Another self-regulating industry (like the financial, etc.) that cares far more about its members' dues than its members' performance. Well, sometimes when the press gets a little too interested in a doctor or hospital that kills too many patients.

2. I am SO THANKFUL for that law every damned day I work, because let me tell you, most first time new mothers NEED that time in the hospital to recover! Those 48 hours are PRECIOUS, and we jam-pack as much teaching as humanly possible into it as we can. If a mother is breastfeeding, it's even more critical that she stay the full 48. Not every mom stays the full 48, not all need it, but I am so thankful that it is LAW and that they are entitled to it if they need it or even if they just WANT it for simple respite (some women have 3 other kids waiting for them at home and the hospital is the only rest they're gonna get).

Ugh. What an ignorant, misogynist jackass.

They have had that opportunity for years, decades now. Remember how long ago the first "Top Ten Conservative Idiots" was put on DU. While the Rethugs create ads with their mega super pac money that are misleading and downright lies, the Democrats seem to have some kind of arrogance that even though they have actual malfeasance material to use... they simply refuse to use it.

Sometimes I put on my tin foil hat and ruminate on the possibility that the Third Way Dems and the DLC do NOT want to ever hold three houses of power lest their more liberal base demands they work for them, which would piss off their 1% donors, who would then threaten to flip all their money to the pigs in the Republican party. That if the Dems reeeeeeeeeeeeally wanted to win a landslide, they could easily if they only hammered the Rethugs any and every time they fucked up, and that includes their ignorant mouth pieces in the MSM. Jon Stewart finds something new each and every day....there is no excuse or reason why they couldn't find a nice package of abhorrent behavior once every two years.

I was pleasantly surprised to receive a notification letter after my recent mammogram. I never got one before and I really had no idea whether or not I had dense tissue.

If you don't think your patients deserve 48 hours in a hospital after giving birth, or a full understanding of their cancer risks, then you shouldn't have become a doctor.

MONTGOMERY — Sen. Jabo Waggoner, R-Vestavia Hills, said this afternoon that Sen. Larry Stutts is abandoning his legislation regarding mammograms and post-childbirth hospital stays.
“He is withdrawing the bill, he told the (Senate Republican) caucus,” said Waggoner, a longtime lawmaker who co-sponsored the bill.
Stutts was not immediately available for comment and didn’t return a call this morning. The Senate Majority Leader’s Office said a statement would be released soon.
