White people, don't forget to check your white privilege
... box on your tax forms. It reduces your federal tax rate by a cool 10%. April 15 is coming.

1. I wonder when this pivigage thing will
wear out?
I really don't think most white people are in denial about the idea that minorities have had a tougher time in this country than white people as a whole. We did not have a civil rights movement for white people and we did not have affirmative action because there was no real need for it. Many people need to keep the idea going that white people don't know of privilage and so I guess you will get replys to the OP. If it is meant to be humor I don't think it is funny and I don't think you represent the view of most white people. |

2. I don't really understand why you and others get upset at the mention of it
Some people see the concept of white privilege as a valuable tool to understand the world we live in. Some people don't. But just mentioning it, particularly as part of a joke, . . . i don't get why that should bother you.

You should know that by now. If you read what I said instead of pushing your position.
You need for people to be upset that is the reason you say what you do. Again I agree that there is white privilege. I disagree that most white people don't know they have it! |

18. Go to a few Freeper type sites, set up a poll
And see how many people have even HEARD of white privilege. Add people who have heard of it but think its ridiculous. Add people who are angered by it because black people are lazy. Add people who have heard of it, but think the road has evened out now that there's a black president.
DU is an anomaly. There are plenty of BLACK people who have never heard of the term "white privilege". But if someone started to explain it, most would nod. Tim Scott and Clarence Thomas would deny it. Oh, and Ben Carson. |

To beat people over the head with. And people will only take getting lectured about the same points over and over for so long until they get fucking tired of it what's why. The phrase "Re-education camp" comes to mind. Get the point now?

30. Which is the "worse" club?
Discussing "white privilege" or racism? It seems to me some are getting their feelings hurt because of discussions of white privilege, where as others are actually losing their lives because of racism. There are very few who "demand" someone who is white "feel guilty" about being born white, but rather most try to get others to understand the inherent 'rights' that are bestowed (or denied) on someone because of the color of their skin. It isn't a matter of "re-education" but one of actual education.

33. I think the "feel guilty" part is exactly is what is being demanded.
One of the biggest problems I have always perceived of the Left is alienating people within their own ranks. The phrase "circular firing squad" comes to mind. This topic is the latest of that type. And it is pretty obvious from the multiple past threads on this issue is that it is a one way street. Anytime anyone brings up the point that some working class poor white man is not privileged because he is poor, they get shouted down.

35. But that is your feeling.
No doubt there may be some who want "feeling guilty" as a part, but they are a small minority. It is actually whites who are expecting the result they should 'feel guilty.'
"Anytime anyone brings up the point that some working class poor white man is not privileged because he is poor, they get shouted down. " Part of that is because there are two different issues in play. One is race and one is economic disparity. The problem comes because too many are misunderstanding "privilege" and only making it about money; it isn't. Poor, middle class, or rich, if you are white you have a 'privilege' based on the color of your skin and it can be very different than any 'privilege' one has or doesn't have based on economic situations. |

29. Thank you and I agree with you.
I remember when the Kennedy's (John) was running for President and he visited Appalachia and saw the conditions there, he was appalled. The majority of those people were whites and lived in abject poverty and his brother (not sure, the other one who got killed), vowed to make their lives better. Since then, no other President has stepped in to help those people. There was a documentary that Lisa Ling did and it was so sad. The guy who controlled the coal mines built a mansion and his rationale to Lisa Ling is that he was showing the people of Appalachia that they too could be rich, that was so much bull shit. The disparity in wealth all over the globe is sickening and one would think that the most powerful country in the world would help its people. And as for the native Indians, that is a whole different story.

39. It can be frustrating for sure.
Sometimes, it can be worth it. Other times, it is just like teaching a pig to waltz; maddening for both involved. I rarely focus on the "stupid" because, like you said, they can't be taught. However, the "ignorant", they can be taught. I can understand how some get confused, but there are more than a few who just don't want to "get it" as they are more focused on their own "persecution."

41. I understand where you are coming from. How do you teach a young
person to give up his/her seat on the bus or train that is clearly marked 'these seats are for the elderly' but the young folks are so intent on their iphones and clearly ignore the disabled person. That really riles me.
I am not a young person but I always give up my seat on the bus or the skytrain for an older person, a pregnant woman, etc. Social media is transforming the younger generation and if they are are future leaders, we need help. I find it useless to advocate for civility and I compare it to the Jehovah witness people, they never give up. Every morning, rain or sun, they are there to give out their literature. You get beat down by the status quo and just try to exist, plus we all have our issues with our work life. You go to work, you get bullied, trampled on and you tell yourself, I have to hang in there as jobs are no longer accessible and with age, you are not a prime candidate. It is a vicious cycle. I now try to help people or charities that I deem fit. As for charities, that is another beef for me. Most charities sell your name and guess what, the CEO of some of those charities get almost 80% of your donation as their salaries. You never know where to draw the line sometimes! |
