"They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion"

No truer words has President Obama spoken:

"They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

And it is more evident today than when he said it in 2008.

From the conservative wing of OUR party, from DU to any number of good old boy "liberal" pundits like Joe Baegant and Maureen Dowd, showed the exact reason why the Obama adminsitration would never make the changes expected, because our own damned party was infiltrated to the hilt by people whose only objection to conservatism was that the Rich had finally realized that many former Conservatives were simply dead weight to them!

sound as if he said that people should sacrifice their first born. I mean, the vitriol that followed after that unauthorized taping - and the way it was taken out of context - had me drop back in my seat and wonder which planet I'd landed on.

I, too agree that there was nothing wrong with what Obama said. it was and is still true. but I don't remember liberals coming to his defense. it was not meant as a put down as was portrayed by the right wing media and cowardly indorsed by the "liberal" media. it was sickening. that was when I lost a lot of respect for my fellow fair weather liberal friends. we liberals have been our worst enemy.

I think in hindsight, the conflation of opposing free trade with reactionary votes on immigration/guns should've been a clue.
