Appreciation thread for President Barack Obama~

After All This, Has He Earned Nothing?
By Liberal Librarian

There are no wage/labor/environmental protections!”

That’s just false. The summary shows this. You can only believe this if you, without evidence, assume the summary is false propaganda.

And that last point leads into the meat of the essay.

“Obama must be lying. He’s sold us out. He’s the corporatist we always knew he was.”

Pres. Obama has operated under a handicap for the 6 and a half years of his presidency.

No, I’m not talking about him being the nation’s first African-American president. There is that. But I’ve come to realize that’s not his largest handicap.

No, I’m referring to the almost messianic hopes pinned on his presidency.

Yes, his campaign and governing themes have been “hope” and “change”. But I defy anyone to point to me where he says “I am the hope,” or “I am the change.”

People heard the words “hope” and “change” and zoned out after that, without listening to the full message. “You are the hope.” “You are the change.”

Nothing is easy. Pres. Obama didn’t promise a path laid with primroses. He emphasized that nothing changes without struggle, without sweat. But Americans, being Americans, pinned all their hopes on a magical being. And when life, being what it is, turned out to be much messier than they had envisioned, they turned on a dime and blamed Pres. Obama.

“He betrayed us! There’s no change, no hope!

The Trans-Pacific Partnership Would Promote
Off-Shoring of American Jobs

Nearly five million American manufacturing jobs – one out of every four – have been lost since implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). Since NAFTA, over 60,000 American manufacturing facilities have closed. The TPP would replicate and expand on the NAFTA model.

A leaked text revealed that TPP is slated to include the extreme foreign investor privileges that help corporations offshore more U.S. jobs to low-wage countries. These NAFTA-style terms provide special benefits to firms that relocate abroad and eliminate many of the usual risks that make firms think twice about moving to low-wage countries.

us as much as we need to know. After years the current draft doesn't favor the 99% and the Pres has been involved all the way. It's not conceivable that what we've seen would change 180 degrees in the final draft. Mitch McConnell likes what he's seen. Unions are against it.

Environmentalists are against it.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership Would Threaten the Environment - Affecting the Water We Drink and the Air We Breathe

The TPP could sharply increase U.S. exports of natural gas - creating incentives for more fracking. The Department of Energy could lose its authority to regulate exports of natural gas to countries that have signed a "free trade" agreement with the U.S. that includes "national treatment for trade in gas." The TPP could eliminate the government's prerogative to determine whether the mass export of natural gas to TPP countries - including Japan, the world's largest natural gas importer - is in the public interest. The resulting surge in natural gas exports would not only raise gas and electricity prices for consumers, but would ramp up the dangerous, chemical-laden practice of fracking.

We get to comment on it AFTER it's headed for home base? Technically, we (the people) still pay the salaries of govt. reps (admittedly, that's a laughable contention any more, but that's how it's SUPPOSED to work) and yet they have to cow to corporate lawmakers???? Personally I do well when the economy is good and bad when the economy is bad.

The manufacturers would have left the USA NAFTA or not. China and India have tons of people and a lower cost of living and technology allowed things to be done from there. The TPP is trying to manage that. Leaving China out. China has 1/4 of the world's entire population!

I don't know anyone looking for work. Everyone I come across has employment right now. I am self employed and may be in a position to hire at some point. I don't think the TPP will stop that.

Fri Apr 24, 2015, 09:02 PM

... (and deliberately so), is the fact that those desiring a Messiah were never the Obama supporters - who realized from the get-go that one man (as remarkable as that one man turned out to be) was going to change the world as we know it by himself, was going to fulfill everyone's desires overnight.

It's the Messiah-seekers who were "disappointed", while the realists understood that pursuing hope-and-change is a team effort, and doesn't come about with the election of one man/woman to the WH.

And now they're back to Square One - insisting that ____ will, if elected, change the world for the better within forty-eight hours of being sworn-in. Everything that is wrong will be righted; everything that is unjust will be rectified; everything that is unfair will be undone.

And a lot of them don't even know who ____ is yet - but they're sure ____ will be the Messiah they've been waiting for.

That's their great Messiah. Of course most of them can't name "anyone" who is that famous "somebody else" when you ask them.

Of course they do have their own board over at PU where they gather and discuss all the negative things about other candidates, yet very few of them have a "real" candidate they back. Sure they have vote for Warren signature lines, and some do plan on backing Bernie. The problem is Warren isn't running, and Bernie, I do love this guy, can't win. I do hope he runs to keep the debates interesting though.

The great irony is that those who accused Obama supporters of thinking he was their Messiah are the very people who were convinced such a person exists, and were "disappointed" when they realized he wasn't the Great Saviour they were themselves looking for.

But not to worry. Candidate ____ WILL BE that Messiah! Candidate ____ WILL BE the person who satisfies all of their desires! Candidate ____ WILL BE everything they have hoped for and dreamed about.

The fact that many believe Warren is that Messiah - the woman who ISN'T running - speaks for itself. If DU is still around in 2017, there will be endless posts about how she would have done everything they wanted, if only the nefarious PTB hadn't "prevented her from running" - or so the story will go.

BTW ... what is PU?

... are those who believe that if only (insert magical candidate here) were elected president, he/she would cure all if the nation's ills, and their every decision would be an exact reflection of their supporters' personal views and opinions - without even acknowledging that those supporters often have divergent views among themselves.

No such person exists. But the Messiah seekers are convinced that he/she is out there.

For six-plus years I have been told on this site that Obama's "cheerleaders" think he's their Messiah, when in fact his supporters have always recognized that they wouldn't always agree with his policies, nor did they ever expect that that would be the case.

Wishful thinking about the perfect candidate/POTUS is just that - wishful thinking - and it has absolutely no basis in reality.

Like Judas the zealot who wanted a political revolution and betrayed JC because he didn't go along? Or the fate of a straw dog?

In one translation Chapter 5 of the Tao Te Ching begins with the lines "Heaven and Earth are heartless / treating creatures like straw dogs".

Su Zhe's commentary on this verse explains:

"Heaven and Earth are not partial. They do not kill living things out of cruelty or give them birth out of kindness. We do the same when we make straw dogs to use in sacrifices. We dress them up and put them on the altar, but not because we love them. And when the ceremony is over, we throw them into the street, but not because we hate them."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_dog

When there is love shown for Obama, it's more for the example he sets, the compassion in word and deed, that inspires people. At least that's what it is for me.

But the candidates have seen what has been done to Obama, and some of them run from his fate. Why would the newest sacrifical lamb expect any better if they did get elected?

Voters informed by paid voices, not facts, history or civics, is who they will face. And don't forget the hate and outrage from the Ignoratti and the extremists.

We're losing a lot of decent folks who won't run for office. Why put oneself in front of an assassin's bullet for such voters?

avalanches of shit that have been thrown at him since he got to the White House. No - I take that back, it started when he was running for President the first time. How few people have cut him any slack. Hell, Dems wholesale ran away from him in 2010 and again in 2014. Maybe we should take a lesson from Al Gore - who's idiot campaign people advised him to run away from Bill Clinton. They were scared of The Monica. They should have farted at it and moved ahead - telling America about the great shape the country was being left in after the Clinton administration. SCREW the impeachment - which was a kangaroo court affair if ever there was one. THAT'S ALL THE BAD GUYS HAD. A stained blue dress. They investigated BOTH Bill and Hillary FOR YEARS, threw everything they had at them both, and came up with nothing. NOTHING. But The Monica. And the polls and everything else told the truth. He left with high ratings and his popularity has only grown. Al Gore was stupid to distance himself from that.

STAND UP AND BE DAMN PROUD OF WHAT WAS ACCOMPLISHED, DAMMIT! Don't run sniveling and weaseling away because you feel the need to play into the game the enemy has shaped and hopes you'll fall into it. Like that idiot Alex Sink did in Florida. All that crap she bought into about how "Obamacare" was "BAAAAAD" but... but... but... we'll fix it... And of course she got her ass handed to her on Election Night. Nobody votes for wishy-washy!!!! I don't know why she didn't grow some guts and stick her chin out and say "I'm DAMN PROUD of the Affordable Care Act. And HERE'S WHY!" And then go down the list of everything that's true and NOT hostile Pox Noise-spewed lies, distortions and oppositional propaganda. DON'T. BUY. INTO. THAT!!!!!! DO NOT REINFORCE IT!!!!!! Don't even use the wording they use on the other side.

FUCK THAT!!!! Just FUCK THAT!!!!! STAND UP AND BE PROUD OF WHAT WAS DONE AND WHAT HELPED A SHITLOAD OF PEOPLE WHO NEEDED EXACTLY THIS KIND OF HELP, DAMMIT!!!!

What I've observed, also, is that voters like someone who stands for something. I remember when dubya was running for election in 2004. One of the key statements he repeated was - "you may not agree with me, but you know where I stand." That really was "the phrase that pays" that year. Even people who really did indeed disagree with him gave him points for the "but you know where I stand." People read honesty into that. People read certitude into that. It came across as standing for something. Strong. Certain. Assured. With conviction. Not spineless. Not wishy-washy. And America generally speaking, tends to admire those qualities. His policies may suck but at least he's STRONG in his beliefs! I wish people cared more about the "his policies" part than about the "he's STRONG in his beliefs" part.

If I could coin a Democratic Commandment I'd say - "Thou Shalt NOT buy into, or reinforce, ANY meme or framing that the enemy puts out there."

DAMN I get so pissed at my party sometimes. They're SO stupid!!!!! Who the hell is developing strategy for them? Bozo the Clown?

Gore ran from Clinton's strong economic record. He also picked the detestable 'republican lite' phlegmatic snooze-fest, Lieberman. Do you remember in the debate that was open to the public, someone asked both candidates whether they believe in abortion? Gore gave a long-winded reply that was very nuanced and difficult to understand. Bush asked the person to ask the question again and she did. Bush said 'No.' I felt Gore lost the election at that moment.

I totally agree with you. I don't know who the fuck advises these democratic candidates to run away from the previous democrats' strong record. Fuck that. Run on President Obama's great successes (starting with providing affordable health care for millions who previously were out of luck if they had a catastrophic illness) and go further. Say we must expand on those gains. Improve it to lower the costs of health care.

I think and hope that Hillary's team and every damn democrat running for every office finally gets this message through their thick skulls. Go positive. Go more left in policy. Say President Obama helped stabilize the economy. Saved the auto industry. Ended two wars. Now we must continue and benefit from a peacetime economy, like we did in the Bill Clinton era and the Eisenhower era. Raise the minimum wage! Reduce military hardware spending! Now we must really strengthen the economy for the 99%! Offer concrete proposals! Pick a vice-presidential candidate who is younger and more liberal! People will vote for it! They will fall asleep on election day if it's just more of the same DC insider rhetoric of platitudes with no concrete progressive proposals that will be enacted on day one of the Presidency, and fought for with Congress throughout the President's first term.

Thanks Calimary. You read my friggin' mind.

There is no way you could be so many standard deviations away from mean without manipulation. Just doesn't happen.

Same with the number of posts with an anti-Obama message number of recs, etc. Some here clearly have an agenda, and it isn't to support the Democratic party. While there are anti-Obama Democrats, they aren't in the proportion you see here, and they don't spend all their time here promoting their agenda.

Fri Apr 24, 2015, 09:17 PM

Let's look at the tally.

Against the TPP are unions, environmentalists, Doctors Without Borders, noted economists, progressive politicians.

In favor are Mitch McConnell and the Republicons, Pres Obama, candidate Clinton, the giant corps, Goldman-Sachs and Banksters, and of course Wall Frackin' Street. How can Democrats join this group?

When do Democrats crap on unions and environmentalists in favor of Wall Street?

The AFL-CIO has provided the administration with ideas about how to improve the U.S. trade positions so they work for the 99%, not just the 1%. Unfortunately, it is an uphill battle; the global corporate agenda has infused trade policy with its demands for deregulation, privatization, tax breaks and other financial advantages for Big Business while shrinking the social safety net in the name of “labor flexibility.”

Global businesses that reap the benefits of U.S. trade policy want the TPP to look like prior “free trade agreements” as much as possible. And while negotiations are not yet complete, the publicly available information is concerning for workers: it looks as if, once again, the global corporations are having too much influence in the process. And working families may once again get left behind.

Fri Apr 24, 2015, 09:18 PM

I loved Lyndon Johnson, but there were some policies that and strategies of both I have major disagreements with.
With Obama I have a real problem with his buddy-buddy relationship with Wall Street and his strategy to seemingly block any dissent or even changes to policies that seem specifically geared to Wall Street.

His recent statement calling liberals 'wrong' or whatever it was on TPP sounded just like what he did as his administration maneuvered away from the public option for health care and into a very insurance industry friendly ACA.
If what he says is true, then he should do what he promised and have an open government policy. If the TPP is what he says it is open the documents and prove it.

As I have said before he (and Hillary) were my last two choices in 2008 because of their ties to Wall Street. 7 years later I believe one minor stooge on Wall Street has paid any price for nearly tanking the world economy. The statute of limitations must be up by now. Prosecuting Wall Street was too hard to prove we are told. The financial system is sitting in a configuration where it could easily topple again.

Policies and strategies is what I have a problem with. I have hopes we can discuss policies and strategies like adults. But when I mentioned this the other day I was essentially invited to leave.

Someone at sometime must stand up to the Wall Streeters. Obviously it will have to be a Democrat. Please don't tell us you will when you know you won't. Please do not blame the base when they ask for real answers.

Love his policies on social issues. Fully understand how he has been the most villanized President ever with a congress that has taken obstruction to unprecedented levels.

And once more I expect to be attacked.

The ACA did, however, allow for the individual states to go single payer. One state wanted to (Vermont I think) but realized it wasn't economically possible.

In other statements, Obama has spoken favorably of single-payer in concept, but always adding qualifiers.

In February 2004, about a month before the primary election in the U.S. Senate race, the Associated Press reported the stance of all the candidates on universal health care. "Obama says he supports the idea of universal health care but does not think a single-payer government system is feasible. He says the government should be the health care provider of last resort for the uninsured." In a rundown of all the candidates' positions, the Associated Press summarized Obama's position as "Support, but 'probably not at this stage,' a single-payer government system."
In his book The Audacity of Hope , published in October 2006 when he was a U.S. senator, Obama described single-payer as the hope of the left, while those on the right wanted a market-based approach. "It's time we broke this impasse by acknowledging a few simple truths," Obama wrote, suggesting a system much like the one he supports today.

His recent statement calling liberals wrong or whatever: They were wrong. They claimed that Obama wouldn't let them see the TPP, which isn't true, and made other statements that weren't true. The insurance friendly ACA: I'll dispute that as well. The insurance industry is now capped on profit. They must use 85 cents of every dollar on medical care. That means their operating expenses and profit must come from the remainder. If it was so insurance friendly why was the insurance industry secretly lobbying to defeat it? The insurance industry also didn't get two things it desperately wanted and are still fighting for: 1. Having to cover pre-existing conditions and 2. the cap on profits

You make several references to his ties to Wall Street, but offer no supporting information. Just because they couldn't prosecute Wall St (and this was after the crash when they had likely destroyed any incriminating evidence) doesn't mean he's in their pocket.

Like pretty much every politician who ever came to national prominence, what you get with Barack Obama is a mixed bag. Overall a very good package (especially compared to any R) -- but some serious flaws on issues like Wall Street, drone warfare, surveillance & whistle blowers, and now TPP.

Is it possible to express serious disagreement with a Democratic president (or candidate like Hillary Clinton) with being labeled a "hater" or a "purist" or someone who seeks a "messiah"??

Sure, there are some critics for whom shades of gray do not exist. Any major disagreement is painted as a complete betrayal that puts the politician entirely in the enemy camp. But, there are also many defenders who are quick to hurl the labels (noted above) in an effort to lump all criticism (regardless of how justified or reasonably expressed) together into an opposing enemy camp.

IMO, the OP is part and parcel of that effort.

How DARE anyone criticize this president!

I understand that you don't like the use of drones, whether your politics support Al Qaeda and ISIS or you just don't like drones, but the bottom line is drones kill fewer people than conventional warfare. If we had to send troops in to fight ISIS or Al Qaeda more people would die (many of them civilians). If we didn't fight Al Qaeda or ISIS at all, more people would die. They are taking over towns and cities across the middle east and killing people

Let me ask you this: how many videos of ISIS beheadings do you have to watch before you think the US has the right to drone them?

You think that countries like Germany, England, France, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Canada simply don't have the technology to strike targets with drones and THAT is the reason they don't do it?

That the US is the only country capable of doing it?

Is that really what you think?

...."you don't have to see what's in it....just trust us." I've heard that one before. The liberal heart of the Democratic Party strongly opposes both...so I guess Ellison, Edwards, Brown, Sanders et al. are just haters. Yea....riiiiiiiight.

Sorry, folks, but for many of us it's policy that matters. We don't give a shit about cults of personality.

Bravo or Brava!!

You take the cake, you really do.

You could not even let an appreciation thread go by without taking a dump. Seriously, was there not enough crap on Obama threads in DU for you to dump this crap on? Lord knows they would love it. Go to the top of the page, there are plenty there.

Let DU show this President some more disrespect. He has not had enough, please shovel some more on.

President Obama is the most disrespected President ever. I am so very ashamed of my country. No President in history has ever been treated this way. He is our first black President, and I just want to cry for how he is treated.

Your disrespect is so noted.

The TPP could easily mean jobs and lives, just as NAFTA did. You want to mindlessly worship , go right ahead. I'll hold their feet to the fire for what they actually do. It's called being an adult, not a mindless acolyte . I worship no one.

"OOOoooooo.....shiny!" thread.

If I were into worshipful obedience, I'd be a Republican. I'm a Liberal Democrat. I worship no political figure and any politician is only as good as their last policy statement. Obama has done some important things in his two terms, but has gone completely off the rails on TPP and I WILL NOT shut up about it just because it's inconvenient for some mindless worshipers.

I hold back on my personal disappointments. But it doesn't mean I don't appreciate him when I'm critical of a position or a tactic.

There's a sense that this issue is important for varrying reasons that has nothing to do with Warren, Brown and Sanders' concerns. And Obama (my favorite president ever ) is not behaving like his cool self. That tells me there is more stress on this issue and that his heart and mind may not be in it as in the past.

I do appreciate our President. I can do so though, while having very strong doubts regarding this new trade deal. It's pretty damn great to have health insurance, after going ten years without it.

That being said.... those of us who are objecting to this trade deal, to appointments Obama made, to other things this administration has done - probably do not (at least, not generally speaking) actually hate the President. They may be disappointed because they expected him to do some things differently. No voter I knew though (and certainly not me) who supported Obama was looking for a "Messiah". We were, however, looking for a Political leader who could help move our Country and our lives in the right direction. I believe he has largely done so, in many ways.

That does not make him exempt from criticism, from skepticism, from doubt, or from the accountability that those who voted for him are expecting.

I appreciate our President, I appreciate the hell out of the good things he has done - but I still want full documentation on this trade deal, I don't trust it, I don't trust most of the people pushing it, and as much as I do appreciate the President, I cannot simply take his word that this will be a good thing. Don't tell me. Show me.

President Obama is one of the best presidents of the modern era. He accomplished a number of major things what many could not achieve before including Bill Clinton.

The ACA is a prime example. It is changing the face of healthcare in this country as we know it. Yes, it is based on private insurances, but now they have to adhere to a set of rules. That fact alone is a giant step forward. Despite all the criticism from his detractors, it delivered just as the president said it would. The cost of healthcare has been going down ("bending the curve&quot , the number of people insured as been increasing. It is becoming firmly ingrained in the fabric of our society and I doubt it will go away. Even right leaning people are now coming around to it once they reap the benefits.

The reforms of the finance industry is another notable high point. No longer can credit card companies jack up your rate because you were late on another card. It is just but one small example of the consequences of that reform.

Of course, LGBT rights are moving forward at a very fast pace now. When the president took office, 31% of americans approved of Gay marriage, now this number is 61 %. Yes he did not do that all by himself but he acted as a catalyst and enabled it starting with getting rid of dont ask dont tell.

Foreign policies achievements are significant and historic. We are negotiating with Iran rather than bomb them, we are opening up with Cuba, something we should have done decades ago.

We finally are out (mostly) of irak and afghanistan. No more large ground troop expeditions whose sole purpose was to feed the militaro industrial complex. Instead, a reasoned, pinpointed strategy of striking when and if needed for humanitarian reasons.

Is everything perfect? Of course not. We saw that with drone attacks that have unfortunate side effects. Is it better than 100k soldiers on the ground, for sure it is.

When you consider the scope of all that this president has done, with the headwind he had from the GOP congress, it is truly amazing.

Yes, for sure, you can find areas with which you do not agree with the president. For me, I am a pragmatic. I do not get hung up on an issue I disagree with the president, I consider the whole thing which is that on balance he has been a boon for us democrats, and the country in general. People will realize this in decades to come, history books will mark it.

Way, way back, about 2009! I love the man, and think he has done wonders while in office; but disagreeing with a stance here and there just isn't a reason for hatred!

I worked HARD on both campaigns, and am usually the only one in the area with Dem signs in my yard every election.

Sat Apr 25, 2015, 10:13 PM
Apr 2015

My short time here it seems his most ardent supporters have the most problem with this.

I said in another thread when the final version is released to the public of the TPP
And if what the critics have been saying are true about the deal..
How will his most ardent supporters react
?

Can you still support a President that is working so hard to pass
a trade deal that will hurt the workers and unions in this country?

Also hurt the environment globally ? Something that will make it more profitable to move operations
over seas for more corporations while losing good paying jobs here?

Less regulations for the food we eat?

Where does it end for his most ardent supporter ?

Is this the line or will you just move it back more and still cheer lead ?

I guess what I'm asking you is... Can a man do a lot of good things then do something really bad that erases all the good he did .

I say Yes that can happen

Why is it that when someone posts an appreciation thread for the president, like this one, it gets highjacked by the anti Obama crowd? I jus don't get it.

I don't see that happen with the appreciation threads of say Warren, or Bernie. Why can't some here be civil instead of acting like chidden?
