not thrown by police. Smoke bombs thrown AT police.

They're reporting that it's apparently from some kind of smoke bombs that were thrown by protestors and that the police haven't deployed any kind of smoke or gas.

I don't know what "pepper balls" are. Probably like pepper spray but in a canister or something.

only difference is the contents of the projectiles.

The streets have mostly cleared. It's mostly police and media plus a small number of people who seem determined to disobey the curfew.
