Bernie Sanders: I’d love Bill Clinton to debate my wife

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont said Monday he’d love to have former President Bill Clinton, the spouse of Democratic presidential candidate and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, debate his wife, Jane.

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell brought up a Washington Post report suggesting that Mr. Clinton does not plan to do campaign activities for Mrs. Clinton in 2015 and asked Mr. Sanders if that would be a relief for him or whether he’d like to see the former president out there.

“No, I’d love him to be debating my wife, Jane,” replied Mr. Sanders, Mrs. Clinton’s only rival on the Democratic side at the moment. “She’s pretty smart.”

Mr. Sanders also reiterated his opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a proposed trade deal between the United States and Pacific Rim countries that is pitting President Obama against some members of his own party.

“The TPP is, in my view, is a continuation of disastrous trade policies. Enough is enough — we need new approaches to trade which creates jobs in America and not in China,” he said.

I expect bizarre non-sequitors from his fan base. But from the candidate himself, as others have noted above, this is just weird.

hillary is the opponent. i thought it was an excellent point.

bill is the spouse. nothing more, in this campaign.

as it seems hillary is doing iwth her campaign. which i think is excellent in her position of the run.

The reporter was suggesting that his main opponent's spouse might be involved in the campaign. His response was perfectly on point: "Great idea!"

Sen. Sanders was, apparently, responding to a comment that former President Clinton is not intending to be involved in his wife's campaign. There's your non-sequitor.

Perhaps there was a sardonic tone or a bit of levity that I missed which may have made the comment more appropriate. I wouldn't know, though, because I didn't watch the interview.

Mea culpa, I guess. OTOH, perhaps I would have clicked-through for more if the link hadn't been to The Washington Times.

Da fuq?

As in, "No it is not a relief for me, because I would have loved to see my possible First Lady debate Hillary's possible First Man."

The question is actually contained in the OP, so no need to click through to WT.

I'm sure his wife could make a great showing against "First Husband"...

1: Would it be one of the "DNC Official Debates"

2: Has such a thing ever happened before?

3: Hah! Just testing

This would make a great SNL skit.

Not so much because I think that Jane would be the same thing as HRC was in the White House, but I'd love to listen to Clinton's arguments. He could finesse the thorns off of a rose.
