I am sorry if this is half formed idea or I am not explaining my thoughts clearly. My wife and I had been talking about the who Duggar issue and just "falls Graces" from the past like Jim and Tammy Bakker and others and It kind of came to me. By oppressing human nature and even natural born desire--ie Being gay making everything "evil"--. From girls not allowed to wear pants, to people not going to beaches for fear of seeing "naked bodies" (people in swimsuits) to the fact Duggars don't wear shorts even the boys for fear it would arise lust.
What I'm beginning to think and not trying to sound like I'm am making light of Josh Duggar terrible and discussing actions. But One seriously has to wonder if these actions or in a sense a reaction to or acting out or however you want to say it--can it be partly caused by such oppressive rules no one can live up too?

(65,616 posts)I would think at 14 that no matter how sheltered a life you lead, you must know it is immoral to do so. I believe kids usually imitate what their parents do, because those are the people they trust and want to earn the respect of - the most.
Now I have no idea if serial rape and incest is something that goes on in that family and has for generations, but like I said kids will usually do what their parents do. They don't just learn that kind of behavior from the Great Kazoo.
IMO.

I cannot think of a single case in which a child who molested other children had not been himself/herself similarly assaulted. Very often the perpetrator seems to be re-enacting his own victimization, but in the role of the perpetrator, perhaps in order to be the powerful one in the victimization.

(65,616 posts)Someone asked in GD yesterday, does any of us feel sorry for Josh...yes of course we all do in a way. Empathy is not a political or corporate brand to be bought and placed on TV.
One of my first thoughts was if he was sexually assaulted by a family member.

(45,274 posts)To be simpleminded about it, repressive cultures demand that people deny and repress (i.e. literally block from consciousness) their "nasty" urges & all things associated with them. Think of the Victorian era with skirts on the piano legs.
Repressed material is always trying to get out, and comes out one way or another: Freudian slips, reaction formation, projection (those OTHER people are lustful creeps), and sometimes plain old disinhibition and acting out. They seek to control what others do as a sort of displacement of the problems they have controlling their own unacknowledged drives.

(11,138 posts)This is not exactly a new idea diabeticman. It has been shown again and again that excessive suppression of otherwise normal human urges results in a boomerang effect, wherein people indulge in these behaviors in unhealthy ways. This is why the phrase "Preacher's daughter" is such a cliche. It's a well documented phenomenon, but of course those that need most to understand it are the ones who most reject things like science and, well, reading.
