He has the nomination in hand and I am sure the right wing hates Obama enough to let their guy tack to the middle. But Willard's deciding to move out into territory where even many rank and file Republicans don't want to go. Is this some kind of game plan, or is he leeting the real Romney out of its cage?

(13,512 posts)Everyone, probably including Romney himself, knows he won't win the general election. So his primary purpose is to use social issues to drive the crazies that make up the rump party the GOP has become to the polls. That's the only chance they have to maintain control of the House and keep the country ungovernable (and wall street unregulated.)

He thinks this issue will put some swing states in to play (i.e. North Carolina).
I hope he is mistaken.
The great thing about his focusing on this issue (for him, or so he thinks) is that he doesn't have to talk too much about economic issues. Conservatives desire to lower tax rates and capital gains rates for the wealthy while simultaneously advocating for elimination of tax deductions that will ensure middle class, working class, and poor people pay more taxes SHOULD be the death knell for the Republican Party. There are a lot of ignorant, misinformed, and hateful people in this country though. I hope they are the minority.
