(17,064 posts)And fans aren't particularly happy with NASCAR lately anyway...attendance has been down. Even though several popular drivers have called for fans not to bring confederate flags, many will just as a big F-U.

(9,314 posts)Withh the nation debating the legacy of the Confederate flag, NASCAR fan-favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. offered his thoughts Friday, saying "it belongs in the history books."
"I think it's offensive to an entire race," Earnhardt said during his media availability at Sonoma Raceway. "It belongs in the history books and that's about it."

(39,909 posts)Thank You,
from a dedicated fan who has never owned a Rebel Flag,
but has enjoyed the door to door racing for over 40 years.
Can anyone here ID this particular car?

(39,909 posts)If I had had 1 Million to spend, I would have bought it.
It is the most beautiful stock car ever built.
Never raced.
I was wondering if there were any old Stock Car Fans hanging around DU.
I watch every week,....but on TV.

"In 1967, Chevrolet was out of stock-car racing. But Smokey Yunick showed up at the Daytona 500 with an unsponsored Chevrolet Chevelle, and Curtis Turner put it on the pole, besting the heavily funded factory Ford and Chrysler teams. It was a huge upset. Turns out the car was only 7/8 scale, which is why it was so fast. Narrower and shorter than stock, it pushed a lot less air."

(39,909 posts)That was (and still is) a beautiful car,
and Smoky was one of the best.
Can you imagine the problems with building a 7/8 scale car?
It was beautifully crafted.
It sold recently for $1Million.
Never raced.
That was over 50 years ago.
I'm surprised that there are members of DU who instantly recognized it.
I thought I was the only one.
NASCAR does not have many fans here.

(38,263 posts)My parents gave me a subscription when I was eight and until I quit high school.
It used to bother me that Smokey smoked.
He built an interesting windmill.
His "Total Energy System" was featured in the Aug 1975 Popular Science.

I never acquired any great love for cars, my interests tended to electronics, computers, biology, and rockets/explosives (often one and the same!)
I quit rockets/explosives for the most part when I recognized I was a danger to myself and others, but not until I'd accumulated some scars.
