UK anti-Semitic incidents soar in first half of year – report

The number of recorded anti-Semitic incidents in Britain soared in the first six months of this year compared with 2014, probably due to a surge in reporting among fearful Jews, a report by a Jewish community body said on Thursday.

There were 473 recorded incidents between January and June this year including two classified as “extreme violence”, said the Community Security Trust (CST), which advises Britain’s estimated 260,000 Jews on security.

That represented a 53 percent rise compared to the same period last year, said the CST which has recorded anti-Semitic incidents since 1984.

Across Europe, Jews have warned of a growing undercurrent of anti-Semitism, fuelled by anger at Israeli policy in the Middle East and social tensions over immigration and increasing economic hardship under austerity policies that have helped far-right movements gain popularity.

Those fears were exacerbated in January when an Islamist militant gunman killed four people in a Jewish supermarket in Paris, followed a month later by an attack on Copenhagen’s main synagogue.

There are indications it has risen in some places, fallen in others, but an overall picture, I am not really sure. The US though, is not facing as many economic problems as other parts of Europe, nor do we have the same immigration issues. Generally, the numbers for events this year will come out next year, unless someone decides to release them earlier.

I think France and Germany do "mid-year evaluations" but I haven't seen those either.

...but, I found this from France:

Attacks On France's Jews Surge Amid Concerns Of Rising Anti-Semitism in Europe

The number of reported anti-Semitic incidents in France increased exponentially during the first quarter of 2015, compared to the corresponding period the year before, a French watchdog group found. The country has seen an 84 percent uptick in anti-Semitic hate crimes since four Jewish shoppers at a kosher supermarket in Paris were killed by an Islamist gunman after the Charlie Hebdo murders, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported.

The watchdog, Service de Protection de la Communauté Juive (SPCJ), counted 508 anti-Semitic incidents between January and May this year, compared to just 276 incidents the year earlier. Almost a quarter of those attacks were classified by the organization as violent. Most of the other incidents were reportedly death threats, JTA said.

Jewish leaders in France have grown increasingly concerned by the rise of anti-Semitism in their country in recent years. From 2013 to 2014, anti-Semitic incident reports doubled, the European Jewish Press reported. On Monday, CRIF, an umbrella of Jewish organizations in France, issued a statement saying that the recent SPCJ findings represent just a sliver of the full extent of incidents. ''Nothing seems to stop the dramatic increase of anti-Semitism in France, which today reached appalling levels,'' they said.

In the wake of the kosher supermarket attack, Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, called on Jews in Europe to emigrate en masse to Israel, vowing that the Jewish state could ensure their safety where Europe could not. "This wave of terror attacks can be expected to continue, including anti-Semitic and murderous attacks. We say to the Jews, to our brothers and sisters, Israel is your home and that of every Jew. Israel is waiting for you with open arms,” the Israeli leader said.

There are some reports of increases of anti-Semitism at US and Canadian college campuses, as well, but that was te xtent of hinf I could find on the most recent data.

4. The irony

Christians did plenty of conquering and colonizing. The result? Over a hundred countries are Christian-majority.

Muslims: same thing. The first five hundred years of Islam were all about spreading the word via invasions, conquest, and discriminatory laws that pressures locals to convert. The result? Thirty or forty nations are Muslim majority.

That means that when (say) Indonesian leaders make life miserable for the Christian minority in Papua, no one says "See how Muslims are!". Indonesia is one Muslim country of many, so no one blames "all Muslims" for Indonesia's policies.

Or when (say) Brazil lets it street-children starve or get murdered with impunity, no one says "ah, see what Christians are like! Those scumbags - let's beat up any Chrostians we see."

But Jews - who lacked the lust for conquering - have only Israel. So Anything the Israeli government does, Christians and Muslims can shriek "See how Jews act! Let's hate us some Jews!"

This lets them suppress the historical reasons why there are only fifteen million Jews - and billions each of Muslims and Christians. (But gosh them handful of Jews sure do run the world!)

It lets them ignore the fact that Christian and Muslim militancy has grabbed up most of the world - and happily killed millions of Jews who had no defense and posed no threat. And it has been this perpetual abuse that finally caused some Jews to want a land - one tiny land - of their own, and makes them desperate to defend it.

Anti-Semitism: a strange affliction in which conquerors and their descendants go through weird gymnastics in order to ignore the blood on their hands and keep blaming their historic victims.

I am sure you know he made war throughout his life and is lauded for conquering and converting all of Arabia - enslaving or exiling those he could not convert. The Jewish tribes of Arabia fell afoul of his conqueror dreams, but a little ethnic cleansing Solved that problem. Muslim historical sources are conflicted on whether his army merely kicked out all Jews (no word on how many died trekking across the desert) or beheaded a large number first. One of his wives, I think, was a Jewish woman who had been taken as war booty.

As the Muslim empire expanded by war, Jewish communities lived under Muslim rule as islands within majority-Muslim populations. They were pretty much killed whenever the locals were in the mood to do so.

A notable massacre of Islam's Golden Age was Granada 1066. A Jewish guy gained power and favor with the Muslim leader, so locals killed him and slaughtered the few thousand Jews who lived in the city. That gives a fine perspective on how well integrated Jews were in Muslim lands: basically, they were left alone...until they weren't.

More recent attacks: well i am no expert so I will just name a few:

In Mashhad 1840 or so was "God's Justice" (that's the Muslim name for the event) when the the Muslim leader had his people suddenly attack the defenseless Jews of the area and start killing. After a few dozen were slaughtered he ordered the rest to convert to Islam or die as well. Interestingly the Jews were able to secretly stay Jews for generations - pretending to be Muslim in public but teaching their children Jewish tradition in the homes, as best they could despite fear for their lives. Their descendants thrive today.

The 1834 Safed pogrom occurred in Palestine and lasted a month. The local Muslims were already rebelling against their Muslim overlords, so in the general air of lawlessness they had fun attacking the defenseless (and, of course, hated) Jews. For a solid month they burned synagogues, raped Jewish women and killed Jewish men. This didnt stop until order was restored to the area. Again that shoukd give you an idea of how the average Muslim in Palestine regarded the Jewish neighbors who had never harmed them.

More famous today are the Palestinian riots of 1929, when Palestinian Muslims went house to house to slaughter Jews, who as always were defenseless - including butchering a whole school full of children, mutilating, raping, and burning people, et cetera. Other Muslims hid Jews to keep them safe from the slavering mobs. (These mobs BTW sprang up independently in many towns. It wasn't one mob - it was a widespread multipronged joyous massacre. Again.) The Brits investigated - you can read their report if so inclined. They found nothing the Jews had "done" to cause it. They were simply Jews. And the Muslim majority enjoyed killing Jews.

By the way, these riots are said to be the turning point when Jews in Palestine finally decided to create some kind of defense after centuries of always being the target and turning the other cheek. So the proto-IDF was born.

And then, of course, after the creation of Israel, the number of Jews driven from Arab lands by murder threat and persecution is roughly equal to the number of Palestinians driven out by the Israeli-Arab war of 1947-49. Note that the Palestinian migration occurred in a setting of war and was fueled by wartime fears (that Jews might rape or massacre Arabs as Arabs had previously done to them). Whereas the Jewish migration from Arab lands was the result of peacetime persecution and confiscation of Jewish homes - collective punishment of Jewish neighbors by Arab neighbors, as "vengeance" because Jews in Israel were surprisingly winning a war against the five Arab countries that had joined forces and attacked them.

Since that time, many fewer Jews have lived in Muslim lands as the majority chose relative safety in the US (discrimination and bullying rather than murder) or Israel (constant threat of attack but safety due to a military and a nation of their own, just like the Christians and Muslims had always had. Though not really the same - since of course Christians and Muslims had always wanted conquest and expanding power, and the Israeli Jews just wanted security.)

If your point is that most of the millions I referred to we're killed by Christians you are right. But if you bought into the oft-repeated claim that the Jewish minority lived in safety in Muslim lands, you are not correct. They were generally better off under Muslim rule than Christian rule, but they were still frequently scapegoated and hated, always defenseless, and murdered at the whims of their hosts and Muslim neighbors

Feel free to do your own research.

Ypu might think about why you (apparently) were unaware of these things. History is generally twisted for propaganda reasons. Current belief, like historic belief, is that The Jews Started It, that Muslims are and have always been their victims,, that Islam is a religion of peace (except for those rare extremists!) whereas Jews are bloodthirsty conquerors who eat babies. Is that the view you had picked up?

Someone taught you that. Well, more fairly: lots of people taught you that.

It's an old myth, yes? But constantly recycled, because it's constantly useful. And of course it's easy to get people to believe the worst of a weird tiny minority.

In A “Particularly Violent Year for Jews”

http://www.adl.org/press-center/press-releases/anti-semitism-usa/adl-audit-in-2014-anti-semitic-inicidents.html#.VbzirLVcCSc

I wish all the haters would just move to one geographical location and stay there, so they would not have to deal with the groups of people they choose to hate.

Then they could sit around and hate and hurt each other, and leave the rest of us to live our lives in peace, with justice and equality for everyone.

Maybe some time in the future, we can find them a new planet of their own to defile.

12. Hating is central to societies

I think it's a mistake to view it as something "that group over there" does. It's actually how societies define themselves and cement their bonds: who do we hate? Let's all get together for a hatefest!

What groups are widely hated by liberals here on DU? Do you see people here getting together in cyberspace to bond over shared hatred of certain groups? Ever see those groups maligned in broad-brush attacks? Or accused based on guilt-by-association? Or assumed to have no humanity or redeeming characteristics but be cartoonish monsters through and through?

I think it helps to recognize that hatred isn't "out there" (in other people! Never in liberal Us!) but very much around us and part of us and created by us. Wherever there is an "us" there is also a "them". And the boundary between Us and Them is our hatred.
