Among the many gun-related things that annoy/piss me off is how conservatives constantly link their supposed Christian beliefs with the 2nd Amendment. Where in the Bible does it say "thy right to beareth arms shalt not be infringed"? When did Jesus ever imply that deadly weapons are more precious than human lives? How is that a Christian value, or a moral value, or a basic human value?

I am most fond of Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20
"Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached and drew out his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.

They usually reference this verse as evidence that Jesus didn't have a problem with them carrying around swords in the first place.
It's not like Jesus then proceeded to fix the ear that was cut off.

The right wing has used both to divide people and divert the focus from all the really nasty shit they are doing to the government.

(182,603 posts)Lee Atwater was the no holds barred political operative who ran Reagan's campaign. He created the cut throat political world than spawned scum like Karl Rove. Atwater had a death bed apology for all the lives he had ruined.
God Guns and Gays were the three pillars of the Reagan Revolution. It was aimed at white males - their women would follow. It was the Republicans saying "Hey, we support YOU!" If you go to church or own a gun or both you should side with us. The other guys are Godless communists who want to take your guns etc. It worked.
The gays part, later PC'ed by them to "Family Values", was a demand of one of the big funders of the Reagan Revolution. He wanted his version of faith, or at least what he preached, to be a pillar. His name was Rev. Sun Myung Moon.
He also funded Falwell's Liberty University with a really low interest loan. This gave Falwell success snd then relevance to be on network TV news as one of the faces of the revolution.
