Golden retrievers gather in Bellevue for carnival and 'fun raising'

Rocky, a golden retriever, is being cared for by Mary Jane and Jim Fitch of Omaha. Rocky, 2, was fitted with a prosthetic leg after being born with a deformed foot.

About 100 golden retrievers and their humans gathered Sunday in Bellevue for an event that celebrates a breed known for being great family dogs.

“There’s nothing better in the world than being owned by a golden retriever,” said Patricia Newman of Omaha. “They are unconditionally loving, friendly and accepting of you.”

The 24th annual Gold Rush Carnival at the Offutt Base Lake and Park was sponsored by the Golden Retriever Rescue in Nebraska. The event is more “fun raising than fundraising,” said Barbara Garrett of the group. The carnival included parades, games such as Find the Biscuit, a fortune teller for pets, a cake walk for pooches and a doggy Halloween costume contest.

“Our meat and potatoes as a group is taking care of foster golden retrievers,” Garrett said. “We provide foster homes for goldens and get them to a forever home. Of course, we call it a ‘furever’ home.”
