Why is U.S. Refusing an Independent Investigation if it's So Clear its Hospital Airstrike was an "Accident"? (The Intercept)

...Liu emphasized that the need for an “independent, impartial“ investigation is now particularly compelling given what she called “the inconsistency in the U.S. and Afghan accounts of what happened over the recent days.” On Monday, we documented the multiple conflicting accounts offered in the first three days by the U.S. military and its media allies, but the story continued to change even further after that. As The Guardian’s headline yesterday noted, the U.S. admission that its own personnel called in the airstrike – not Afghan forces as it claimed the day before – meant that “US alters story for fourth time in four days.” All of this led Liu to state the obvious today: “We cannot rely on internal military investigations by the U.S., NATO and Afghan forces.”...

Many Americans, and especially a large percentage of the nation’s journalists, need no investigation to know that this was nothing more than a terrible, tragic mistake. They believe that Americans, and especially their military, are so inherently good and noble and well-intentioned that none would ever knowingly damage a hospital. John McCain expressed this common American view and the primary excuse now accompanying it – stuff happens – on NPR this morning:

secede our national sovereignty to a lesser group. NO country would agreed to that indignity unless they were beaten and conquered and at the victor's mercy such as happened with Germany and Japan following WWII.

The damning blowback would be even worse the the current problem. Even setting aside our lackluster gravitas of the moment, revealing classified military and government data would create a security nightmare. At least some of those outside groups would be delighted to leak salacious tidbits of our intelligence data to friends and foes alike to weaken the status of the US.

And imagine the jubilant glee of the Republican Party if Obama were to let the UN or NATO take charge of investigating the US military. All their wet dreams would come true and they would be dancing in the halls of Congress as they listed all the new opportunities they would have to undermine Democratic politicians for selling us out to the One World Order. The fringe militant groups and the gun nuts would go bonkers. Democrats would retreat and even join the GOP pile-on to save their spineless butts.

We can expect a slew of Republican led Congressional hearings that will paint Democrats as weak on defense and charge them with destroying their version of American Exceptionalism. The handwringing Dems will publicly mourn the innocent lives lost (we're very good at that, you know) and protest against yet another partisan witchhunt by their showboating, but triumphant Republican colleagues. Oh sure, there will be an official investigation and maybe some retired old American generals and VIPs will be dusted off and called on to serve their country once again, but inevitably the tragedy will be ruled an unfortunate accident of war.
