Doctor Margaret Flowers Arrested at Senate Hearing on Kunduz

Doctor Margaret Flowers Arrested at Senate Hearing on Kunduz

Ahead of Tuesday’s Senate hearing, Dr. Margaret Flowers was arrested for denouncing the bombing, holding a sign which read "Bombing Hospitals=War Crime." She joined other members of CodePink who wore doctor’s garbs covered in fake blood.

We like our war crimes and crimes against humanity far, far away, and if at all possible, swept neatly under any convenient rug. The rug in Afghanistan is bulging noticeably, but there's still some room.

One'd think someone working in Washington would have heard about the First Amendment.

and an arrest is likely, and courts are fine with that.

Anti-war protesters sat in the front row of the hearing with red coloring on their faces. They carried signs that read: “Health care not warfare” and “Kunduz victims: RIP.”

Dr. Margaret Flowers shouted “Bombing hospitals is a war crime! Stop the bombing now!” She was escorted from the room and then brought to the Capitol Hill jail.

Maryland Green Party U.S. Senate candidate Margaret Flowers was arrested Tuesday morning at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee on instruction of committee chairman Sen. John McCain. Flowers and several CODEPINK activists attended the hearing to protest the U.S. bombing of a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan Saturday that killed at least 22 people including patients and children.

Getting arrested is rather the point.

This happens every single day at the Capitol. She doesn't have a leg to stand on as far as a First Amendment right to speak in that hearing.
