The ships are in the Mediterranean....why would the missiles be flying over Iran to get to Syria?

They did not just malfunction.
I could come up with a good conspiracy theory that the targeted 'terrorists' were Saudi-funded on a mission to kill Iranians or that they were Iranian-based on their way to Syria or Iraq.
