Could the next speaker be the same old speaker???

If they really can't find anyone, maybe the present one, will change his mind, stay another 13 months. So, he cried his way off, and he can cry his way get back on. Crazier things have happened in that town....Haven't they?

4. He could stay. Or if he goes, the line of succession starts.

The speaker gives the House clerk a list of people who would succeed him should he become incapacitated/leave office. The top person on that list automatically becomes a sort of "acting speaker" until a new speaker can be elected.

Ironically, the first person on that list is probably McCarthy, since he is majority leader. But neither Boehner nor the clerk are saying who's on the list.

For years she and Kevin McCarthy have been rumored to be having an affair. (can't tell if it's a joke or not )

congress, and I think that having her as Speaker would accomplish that. The idea that she could restore dignity to the Speakership is a joke.

11. I believe technically he could even resign his house seat and still be elected speaker.

It's been pointed out here on DU now and then that there's no specific legal requirement the speaker be a member.
