Outraged Mom Claims Son's Toy Set Came With A Slave Character

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/outraged-mom-claims-sons-toy-set-came-with-a-slave-character_56167754e4b0082030a14a35

A California mom is furious after the pirate play set her son received as a birthday gift came with what she says appears to be a toy slave character.

Mom Ida Lockett told Sacramento's local CBS station that the instructions for the set showed how to shackle one of the dark-skinned toy people, who happens to be wearing tattered clothing and a metal collar and is shoeless.

“It’s definitely racist,” Lockett told CBS News. “You cannot have this specific accessory and call it anything else. The fact that you can Google it, look it up, say what it is -- it’s a slave collar,” she said. &quot The toy) told my son to put a slave cuff around the black character’s neck, and then to play with the toy.”

There is also a cargo cell below the deck of the ship, which Lockett believes is reminiscent of a slave hold.

I would hate to think that any kid should have to deal with racism while pretending to command a ship of murderers, rapists and thieves!

Incidentally, this is Playmobil play set 5135

The one with the collar is the navigator of the ship.

Everyone's enjoying this happy little jaunt, pirate and slave alike. Why you gotta harsh everyone's mellow, buttinsky mom?

Since pirate ships weren't slave ships.

Meanwhile, at Disney...

MY sister bought a doll house that came with a white family and a single black woman wearing a dress that resembled the domestic attire we are all familiar with.
I was thoroughly disgusted when I pointed it out to her and she defended it. She and her family aren't racist, slavery is long over, maybe they are just trying to represent the times since it is designed like a southern mansion, and much more.

Since she wasn't going to, I threw it away.
